    Hi all,

Just lettin you all know that the Union of Secondary Students is launching a Niteline service next Tuesday. It's a helpline and email service based on the Samaritans model. The website's at www.niteline.org (still not fully active but there's a decent amount of info there) if you wanna have a gander.

What is it and is it run by trained professionals?

    · Who will I be talking to?
All of our phone volunteers are third level students, mainly between the ages of 19 and 23, who work from our lovely little office in Cork. There are male and female volunteers, all with different backgrounds, but all trained by the Samaritans to provide a friendly ear to callers, without judging or directing.

    Seems fairly legit Gordie...

Yes, seems to be based on the Niteline project that was done at Third Level back in my day (don't know if that's still going or not) which had its successes. They aren't professionals, but they are trained.

Yep, Niteline still exists at 3rd Level.

Any chance either this could be stickied, or else these links added to the handy links section?

    Hey,

We're actually running with volunteers from the UCC Niteline - most of our front end will in fact be pretty much made up of UCCers, while we organise fundraising, administration, etc etc.

Basically, we use the same model as the Samaritans and third level Nitelines, but we're specifically for secondary students.

And I must apologise for the half-baked nature of the website - we're still working on it unfortunately.

If anyone has any questions or anything there's a forum on the website, or you can find my email address on the site.

    Hey all,

Just off the phone to the volunteer co-ordinator in Cork and we've finalised the opening hours.

The email service is available from now on, and a volunteer will respond to emails within 24 hours.

The phone service will open on Tuesday 7th June and will operate every Tuesday and Thursday during the exam period from 9pm to 1am. We'll also be open on Wednesday 8th for the first night of exams.

The phone service will close for the summer (unfortunately) due to lack of volunteers (being college students they like to think they have lives :D ) and we'll be having our official launch in September. We're using UCC Niteline's number at the moment, but depending on funding etc we'll hopefully open with our own number and more volunteer cover in September.

    Thanks for everyone's support!

    Chris x
