iTrips are illegal in Ireland, but you can buy a nifty device that basically acts as headphones, but instead of ear-pieces, it's a cassette. Lash it into the car and off you go!
This should probablly be in the gadgets section too.

so what if they are illegal , do you think a garda straight out of templemore is going to even know how to drive a car never mind identify an itrip !

back to the subject though , but the ipod direct from apple www.apple.com/ie

go the the education section and since you are a student you get a discount

    itrip ...best place is www.everythingipod.co.uk

I was merely stating the fact that it is illegal, just incase he was unaware. And yes, I would say the Garda would know how to drive a car, and identify an iTrip. Templemore isn't a stone age settlement you know.

I was making an over the top statement concerning the gardais ability to bother bringing someone to court for using a ITRIP

EVERYTHING IPOD send you a disclaimer though telling you they are illegal just to cover themselves

Also download the full station list from griffin to cover the in between frequencies that most stereos as the spectrum is full enough depending what part of the country you are in

total crap tbh honest got one of these really cackly downloaded full station list tried every single station it think you really need a dab radio for it to work properly

i bought mine in the 3g shop in merchants quay and to be honest dont use the itrip any more but it works well on car radios

    itrips are pretty much crap.
Maybe outside Dublin they might work better, but there is just far too much interference in the city when in a car. They do work well enough with a stereo at home though, but that's not much use.

are IPods better the Zen players???

hell no, buy a zen h300 x5 before you touch an ipod, the h300s and x5 both play video and for the same price as an ipoo. iPods are fashion statements little more, they cant play half the formats most other players can and to be honest, all other players are only a slight bit bigger and usually have extras like FM radio, recording etc all built in not as optional extra "attachments" the average ipodder has to carry a ton of these to do anything really, get another player, avoid the ipod plague!

    Suggested ones are
    iRiver H300
    iAudio X5
    Creative Zen touch
or any other non apple player. As an audio player the ipods fine but anything else and its a waste of money, an expensive brick as many will say. All the above players have
    -longer battery life
    -audio recording inbuilt
    -fm radio inbuilt
    -2 have colour screens
    -they both play videos
-and all come in at or less that the ipod equivalent.

www.amp3.co.uk is a good site to look at other options, dont just go with the white statement of fashion, I own a non ipod and I get more oooss and ahhs when I take it out to show off some videos or show people the previous night out on the screen.

    don't exagerrate the video playback of x5 /iriver 340s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

I agree that the itrip is not perfect but you only get interference in Dublin city if you have the station set wrong on it , set the station to say 88.5 and theres is nothing really on that band etc , some music actually sounds better through it because of the natural compression broadcasting on FM does to the sound

It's perfectly possible to watch a full film on either device, you can even rip (back up) a DVD to the proper format and watch it on your iRiver and I'm sure you can probably do the same with an X5. If you want fashion, get an ipod, if you want style and sophistication go with an X5 or iRiver.

And here was me thinking people bought them for sound quality and storage. How wrong was I?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    which?

They all play music fine, even though iRiver has been proven to have better sound quality, I'm not too sure about the X5. But for the money/feature factor unless you are concerned about fashion I'd choose other than the iPod.

Show me the ipod that does video, its a feature and a bloody good reason to not buy an ipod! Sorry but I dont look at an ipod and say I must have one to look uber cool or fit in, I look at it and it says to me "this person needs to be mugged" or at the very least, "this idiot has no sense as he/she thinks this machine will make them popular". Granted the video is a sub feature but it cant be ignored. iRiver is the undisputed king of the sound in the DAP world, and dont even start to say ipods are, most plodders still use the stock buds for petes sake! Pick style, substance, features, quality, and audioclarity over the ipod plague. Dont listen to the iPod fan boys most of them still dont know what audio sounds like. Compare all the competition to the ipod and you will see how bad it really is with the music department.

Clearly you missed the irony of your post that I quoted, and thus missed the point of my post.

Ah I get you now boss:D

Yeah, well in saying that, they all come in roughly the same capacity and even though iRiver has been proven to be better sound wise, most people wont be using earphones that are worth about the same as the player itself so wont be able to tell. But since there is so many to choose from, it's good we have other features to compare. Here is hoping for the day we see a little bit more than a 60GB hard drive on a good DAP.

    dude, you've got issues.

The advantages of the ipod haven been discussed to death. I don't see the need to repeat. As for the iTrips, if you live in a city, don't bother. Even on long journeys they are more hassle than they are worth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

ITRIPs work fine in the city , you need the full station list from Griffin.com

try the low 87.xxx and 88.5 etc

Why is it that people who buy anything other than ipods feel the need to constantly defend their player against the ipod. My mate bought a creative one and he keeps going on about what his one does and what the ipod doesn't. If it's so good, go and listen to it mate and stop annoying me and get over your inferiority complex.
Anyway back to the original question of which is best. Personally I am thinking of buying and went to dixons to do some comparison and was surprised at how big the 20 gig creative one was compared to the 20 gig ipod. It's about twice the thickness and would not be very convenient for slotting into your pocket without having a bulge like you're happy to see someone. It's got twice the battery power, but personally I wouldn't need twice the battery as I have no plans to be away from a power source (home, car, hotel) for any longer than 12 hours. I just want something to hold all my music collection and is easy to use and compact and I think the ipod would suit me best. They all have very good sound quality so I don't think that is an issue. Also there seems to be a lot more accessories for ipods than any other. If you're in a similar situation to me, then the ipod would probably be best for you. If not, well we all have different requirements.
I have a dream that one day all mp3 listeners can be treated equally regardless of size, colour or functionality...

Here is a good guide for connectivity. It's on an iRiver site but serves all devices with a 3.5mm Jack really.

TheBigLebowski, as was pointed out, if you want an iPod to compare to another player, you will have to buy allot of these accessories, which cost allot and will add allot of bulk in your pocket. I for one bother to reply to these posts because I feel that iPod is obviously the best known player and people don't really know that there is even competition, I'm just pointing them in a direction that may better suit their needs.

We're just trying to educate people as to what an overhyped piece of crap a gayPod is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

It's not gay. (don't think you meant that in a literal way:))

Cormie has the right mentality here.

He's not saying the ipod is terrible and rubbish, he just is making sure that people know there options when purchasing a product that costs €300 plus.

The worst thing I find about electronics is once you've bought there always seems to be a new improved version out about two weeks after you buy.

Cormie and others just make sure people fully reasearch as to get the best bang for your buck.
