Working part-time while building a business?

    Hello all,

I hope I can get some good advice.

I am strongly considering quitting my full-time job to start building a (well researched) business.

This business would require me to be near a phone during the day, so working part-time during the day is out of the question.

However, I am happy to work at night/on weekends to keep myself off the streets and sustain the business somewhat until it starts making money.

Do you guys know anyone who has done something like this?
In your opinion is it a good or bad idea?
Can you think of any decent jobs I could do at night/weekends? I would consider technical support.

    Thank you.

It depends on what sort of work your business will involve. The part time job is likely to affect your performance at your new enterprise.

Is it possible to work full time and start the business up par titme? Maybe look into ways of making money off the net e.g ebay, amazon, create a website that makes money via advertisers.

Not an ideal way but could work.

Its gonna be hard to work nights and be alert all day to try and build up a business. The main thing is to cover your expenses that you have during your normal routine.. so what might be a good idea is to maybe do some sort of contract work which will allow you to work when you want where you want.. most part time work ive seen isnt the best paid either unless its like a contract/consultancy role..

Have a look at Nixers.com for part time work and there are some on the usual jobsites like

    Monster.ie
    RecruitIreland
    Irishjobs

Another option is to look and see if you can get someone to back you like
a venture capitalist and then an option to buy them out when the business takes off.. That way you have money to pay yourself a wage and concentrate on the business but you have to answer to someone else..

Or else go to a bank and see if they will loan you the money, again you have money to pay yourself a wage although if it goes wrong you will have a debt to pay back unless its a limited company you setup..

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

never heard of it, but just be careful because starting a business can be extremely stressful, and it will take over your life. you cant just switch it on and off when you feel like it.

I always find that one thing always effects another. Freelance work vs partime job vs full time job vs college etc.
