Under The Counter Payments

    Hi,
My mother is in a tricky situation. Her company is hiring a temp next week and she has heard on the grapevine that the guy wants to be paid under the counter, no tax etc. Its to cover holidays. She doesn't think it is fair as there are others in the company on a same wage who have to pay tax. She needs to come up with some "reasons" for her boss why not to do it this way and to insist that the temp is hired above board. Anyone ever been in a similar situation?

    TIA

Surely if he wants to be paid under the table he would get less?

most obvious, besides legality and tax reasons, would be insurance
if hes not on the payroll and has an accident, trip / fall anything, i assume he wouldnt be properly insured and the boss will be liable for him.

Yeah, theres no advantage or reason to pay someone th esame money , cash in hand, as the company are taking a big risk, for no reward. Can't see why a company would risk themselves for a worker,

exactly, if the company is caught, she's right up the creek. I wouldnt take that risk on a worker. theres plenty of temps out there.

Insurance was the one I was thinking of. Its short term so the obvious way would be pay an agency for someone(save setting up on payroll etc). The temp seems to think he can charge less than the agency and save the company money(so obviously boss likes this idea)

You have to look at it from the temp's point of view too. He might not be working for a while after so he probably needs as much money as he can get. He's got no stability or any company benefits.
