Newly installed Xp - need help with setup

I recently installed Xp home (as in about three hours ago) on my new comp and I've encountered a few problems:

    no internet connection -
i'm hooked up with ntl bb on my soon to be binned computer. I figured all it would take to get connected on this comp would be to plug the external modem into the back.

    no sound -
the motherboard here has onboard sound (i think?? windows says that there is no sound device though) - thought it would detect the speakers that i put into the output automatically.

Finally, and most worringly - i have installed a geforce 6600gt card which complains of low power when i boot up. It says that it has to revert to min. settings in order to avoid system crashes, locks etc.

I have a 350w psu to power a dvd/rw, floppy and HDD (as well as the card) thought this would be enough.

I'm beginning to think i have bought a dell :( and taken the financial screwing like a man

Sounds like drivers are missing for your sound. Right Click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager - see if there's any yellow exclamation marks. Put in any CD's you got with your motherboard, then right-click on the devices with the exclamation marks and select update driver.

For the Internet, if you plug in modem using USB port - Put in the driver disk that came with the NTL modem and install drivers

For the sound - Install drivers that came on Motherboard CD

For the Graphics - Install chipset drivers from motherboard CD

Does the 6600gt have an additional power connector on it? Any of the higherend cards like the 6800's and X800/X850 need additional power as they can't draw enough through the AGP/PCI-E slots. Sounds like thats your problem re low power. RTFM :)

Yep, newer geforce cards give that warning when you don't connect the extra power connector.

The onboard sound may be disabled in the bios.

On most machines press delete while booting to get into the Bios
Go through the options till you get to onboard peripherals - AC97 sound and Midi should both be enabled.
