Unix IPC Sockets (AF_UNIX)

    Yo folks !

One of my few posts on the unix bored being a bit of a n00b to the operating system.

I have encountered these rather odd things called unix sockets, that use file descriptors for inter-process communications. Now, I have realised that I can't use my lovely programming language java to communicate to these sockets as it is not supported. Due to the nature of the box I am working on, (MIPSEL), installing and compiling various different programs is a difficult task.

There is a program ... an mp3 player, that runs on the box. It communicates listens for commands on a socket called /tmp/jd.sock. As far as I know it does at least.

I have written a perl program that apparently connects to this socket and I try to issue commands to the player. I cannot get any response from the socket !

Is there a program for Linux (Debian Distro) that I can use to query sockets, issue commands, and listen for responses ?

    Cheers,

    Slaan.
