Hi, I'm gonna get a new amp soon, but I'm stuck on what amp to get...

    I'm either getting:

    1) AVT-50H + 1912 cab
    or
    2) DSL-401 combo...

I personally think that the DSL combo is the best, since it's all-tube, but what do you guys think?

    Thanx

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

All valve for rock and metal, I'd go for something ENGL. Three channel Thunder 50 combo for €759 is what I'm getting. Ill let you know how I get on.

    LOL, Cool, thanx..

I mostly play Metal, but sometimes need a good clen sound so I think i'll get the DSL-401...It has a jack for an extra cab

EDIT: Yeah I've looked at the TSL-601, anyone know what that's like?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Mmm, I'd like a Whopper right now. With fries and a large coke...

I played a valve state Hi Watt earlier. Incredible sounding. To the tune of €500 in the local shop but I can't find it online.

Eh, really good clean? Not from a Marshall you won't. You'll get an adequate one but it won't be anything to write home about.

hate burger king but i do like hi watts it has to be said...marshall clean sounds like someone pukin in a hall (ie reverb is **** and the tone is very muddled)...that roland i posted is the best clean sound i've heard..or maybe a fender but not a marshall..but hey thats just an opinion get what u want man

It was going for 500 sterling and the reserve wasn't met :(

No chance i can get my hands on that baby....

The only way i'll be able to get a great amp at a reasonable price is to find a moron who doesn't know jack. Does anyone know a moron who's selling a nice amp?

Plec or tits. Plec or tits. Well, did you take a photo? Photo lasts longer. But an Yngwie plec...

    Don't get a Marshall.

    Anyone seen this amp? Linky

    BTW: Anyone tried a TSL-601?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

They should have more women like that at gigs ;)

    Back on track:

Musician Inc have a TSL-601 in stock (it's over a grand), best thing to do is go there early on a weekend and blast away.

Edit: Oh crap, i just noticed that you're in England :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

tsl 601 is ok way better than the other 2 u mentioned...your dead set on a marshall yeah

    LOL yeah, unlucky for me...

Anyway, right now I have a MG30DFX, it's OK, but the distorion sounds rubbish, so I use a Uber Metal pedal...

EDIT: Marshall valve-amps just seem good, and they are affordable (mostly)...Unless I win the lottery, then i'll get a Mesa Boogie

oh right your in england...well if your using an mg an avt isn't that much of an upgrade so dsl or tsl for sure man

Try pick up a second-hand one on eBay. Go for an older Marshall if you're going to get a Marshall but there are much nicer high-gain amps out there that can be picked up for reasonable prices. Try pick up a Dual rectifier on eBay. I saw one go for about $1000 not long ago. How I wished I hadn't bought a Les Paul then. Wait, no I didn't! :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I played a new Gibson Les Paul today. Not sure what model but it wasn't a studio. Sounded nice and felt nice but the quality just wasn't there...

    can u expand on that

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

On which, the quality? Well, the fretboard was dry and seemed to be damaged on the nut side of every fret, the binding had loads of scratches where it was bevelled for the frets, the inserts for the TOM bridge were half covered in lacquer. It just didn't look like a two and a half grand instrument.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

doesn't sound new...lp are way overrated anyway IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

    Yeah, quality started slipping from 95 onwards... Mine's a 93. ;)

I saw it earlier but my computer killed itself before I could reply and I forgot about it. Not really my thing to be honest. Don't go in for emo and metalcore. Right now I just want a cool, no holds barred metal band, thrash or speed, I'm not particularly fussy which. ;)

EDIT: Yeah I've looked at the TSL-601, anyone know what that's like?

I've got a DSL401 and its great I would recommend it absolutely.great crunch and lead channel..tons of balls on the lead channel too for the metal stuff. (I dont use it much myself).and its plenty loud too.
clean channel is decent imo .nice tone to my ears but I've never owned a fender twin so cant really compare to the ''benchmark''. sounds great to me tho e.g. I play a tele thru the clean channel, neck pickup and its sweet sparkling hendrix tone all the way ..a la little wing.

reverb isnt the best tho in truth...prob because fender amps defined the sound.

Its won a few 'best buy' awards in the mags too so thats a bonus. :D
but its all personal taste ...go down and try a load of amps in your local store you might like something different.you never know you might like a Stinger !

Nice thread de-railing there guys :p

The Marshall DSL combo series are kinda infamous for their low build quality. Lots of people, including myself, have had problems with them.
I don't think I could really recommend that you go for one of those.

How about a JCM 800 combo?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10171&item=7326243100&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

If I was after a marshall combo, i'd go for a JCM 800. You'd probably want to get a cheap overdrive pedal for boosting the input, which will boost the amp's gain for you.
This kind of setup is exactly what Metallica used on the first two albums, and I thiiink later on also, for lead tones here and there.

    I'm paranoid now...:-(

    Thanx, guys...

The only place i've seen the JCM 800 is on Ebay, never seen it on any other sites or in shops...I'll go to a music shop some time and try out some amps...

I'm sure if you've had yours long enough, and not experienced any problems, then you'll be ok. You've got a good one I guess.

I think the common problem that people get with them is sound will cut out. I think the solder joints in the amps aren't the best.

I heard about it on various guitar/amp forums. People's 'horror' stories about them.

Mine is currently dead. No sound comes out of it. Before that the sound used to cut out on me frequently.

I'd say don't worry though, if yours is ok now, it'll probably stay like that. I think most of the problems people had were apparent quite soon after buying the amps.

The shops will most likely have the JCM 800 reissue head. Try one of those. You should get a decent enough idea of how the combo version will sound.

Id advise not to get the avt 50. i have one myself. theyr good for a clean sound but they have no FX and the distortion is poor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭JMArr

All valve for rock and metal, I'd go for something ENGL. Three channel Thunder 50 combo for €759 is what I'm getting. Ill let you know how I get on.

Yo Freak...did you get that ENGL amp yet?>wotsitlike?
I tried a 50W combo in a music shop in dublin (instrumental) ...impressive
