Switching cards - delay recognising card

    Hi,

When I switch from Sky to my FTV card there is an almost 3 minute delay in recognising the card since the upgrade.

Sky card goes back in and there's no problem.

Anyone else have a similar problem / solution.

    Thanks,
    Mark.

    Hi Mark,

I seem to be having the same problem. I have not managed to get the FTV card recognised (probably did not leave it in long enough, my wife has no patience). I thought it might have missed a key so I had planned on leaving the card in overnight but I keep forgetting ! The way you describe the problem seems to match my issue in that it does seem to be a card recognition thing as opposed to a missed key etc. It also takes a few minutes to recognise the SKy sub card when you put it back in.

For many years people have been card swapping without problems. But, that isn't to say there won't ever be any problems with it.

It has been said that continually swapping cards can damage the card reader and even more possibly, the card itself.

It's worth your while buiyng a second hand digibox off ebay and a twin ouput LNB, run a second wire from the LNB to the new box and your FTV card has a permanent home.
    Just a suggestion.

Or even better buy Sky+ as you will not have any remote control issues. If you have two regular sky boxes (one sub and one FTV) the standard sky remote will control both of them.

Yep, I have problems too (thought I already answered this thread here, but then rememberd it was over on DigitalSpy) for about three weeks (presumably the time of the upgrade). Its a real pain in the ass, causes me to miss the first few minutes of shows when I flick onto Ch. 5

Are you getting the "searching for listings" message, or something else Marky? Even if the card is swapped while powered down, it'll still take a few minutes to recognise the card.

Yes I am also having the same issues. Pain in the ass.

What was this upgrade issue you are talking about on Digital Spy.

Before you switch cards, switch to Sky News (501). Then swop cards. Seems to work at the moment!

I was always a 187 (Reality TV) switcher rather than a 501 — it nevver used to matter which FTA (as opposed to FTV) channel you switched to.

I have noticed though that a couple of weeks after my initial post here, the problem seemed to go away. What I had resorted to for a while was switching off at the mains for 60 seconds and then swapping the card and switching back on.

    Hi Buckfast,

I was unplugging and inserting card until my wife discovered the 501 trick. After switching to 501 and inserting the card, wait about 30 seconds or so before looking for the new channels.

I also tried my card on another (older) box and it works straight away.

Anyway, happy for the time being!

    Mark.

Ya, that "trick" has been well publicised round these parts over the past year or two, problem was, when Sky upgraded the EPG software a few months back, "hot swapping" seemed to crash digiboxes.

The swapping will work on any free to air channel (Sky News, Reality TV, the shopping channels).

I thought at first maybe it was intentionally part of the upgrade by Sky to combat the use of FTV cards in the Republic, but in the past two weeks, the problem has disappeared again.

Hopefully it was just a temporary glitch and won't be introduced in the future.

Thanks for that, waiting the 30 secs is the key!!!

    Thanks again JD!!!!

It is more stable on switching if you select interactive before changing card. This also lets you select the no-card UK EPG if the Irish card in LEFT IN slot upside down, or a cheque card etc used. (if chip&pin put with chip upper).
