Is there anything wrong with putting a 550w be quite psu into a comp which only really needs 400w.
Does it raise the power consumpion or can it do worse?

There is no problem in using a 550 Watt PSU on a machine that only needs 400 Watt. It is better for the PSU as there is less stress on it.

The PSU would only pull what it needs. It would pull a constant 550watts if the computer only required 400watts. If two PSU's are equally efficient, but one is rated at 500watts and one is rated at 600 watts, they'll both pull the exact same amount of power when used on a 400watt system.

Unless of course the 550w is a ****e brand and the 400w is a good brand.

Any half decent 550w PSU should be costing about 150euro at least. Steer clear of Qtec and Thermaltake and you should be ok... Fortron are good

That PSU seems pretty good. It only has 25 amps on the 12volt line though, which is the same as a lot of 350w / 400w PSUs. All the extra power is on the 3.3 and 5v lines which dont really do much in modern pcs
