Receiving FTA (FTV?) in North County Dublin

I'm just wondering if it's possible to receive FTA (or FTV, which is it?) TV stations in North County Dublin. Ideally the stations would include the main UK terrestrial stations. If so, what's needed to receive them? A one-off cost would be preferable to a monthly subscription.

I'm completely new to this, so please go easy on the three letter acronyms!

    Thanks in advance.

it is possible to receive FTA/FTV satellite channels any where in ireland
the only mainstream uk channels available with FTA are the BBC's 1,2,3,4,BBC NEWS , ITV3
other non-main stream channels are available including music, news, and some movie channels
(there is a reson these movie channels are free!!)

With FTV you can receive all of the above plus ITV 1,2 and channels 4 and 5

for FTA reception you need a FTA receiver and a dish (there is a list of stores at the top of this forum.
for FTV reception you need a sky digi box and a FTV card (which you need a friend in England to Buy for you)

If you were asking about the freeview terestial service I have no idea if it is availible in Dublin
and you may be on the wrong forum

FTA stations = satellite stations that you dont need a $ky card to recieve (i.e. all the BBC stuff plus ITV3 and another 57 odd channels most of them pure drivel)

FTV = all the above plus ITV, ITV2 Channels 4 and 5 -needs a $ky box and card (but no monthly subscribtion) for further info read the sticky FAQ's on this subject

Both FTA (and FTV if you can get a card) are available pretty much anywhere in the British Isles (and well beyond) unless you have something blocking your path to the satellite or a Nazi landlord/local authority/"managment company "telling you that you cant put a dish on your own property

Another option is bog standard terrestrial analouge (available in most of North Co Dublin) or terrestrial digital/freeview (possibly available in one or two places) which is basically an aerial (sometimes rather BIG) on your roof pointed northwards towards Divis, Kilkeel or Camlough

    Terrestrial analouge = BBC1 BBC2 UTV Channel 4 and (occasionally) Channel 5
Terrestrial digital ("DTT" or "Freeview") = all the above plus BBC3 BBC4 ITV2 ITV3 and another 27 odd channels most of them pure drivel

    Thanks for the help guys.

Tony: I spent a good 15 minutes browsing the forum and other sites, but most of it is incredibly inpeneterable to the layperson.

So, to receive BBC, ITV, C4 + the 50 odd other channels on FTV, I need:

    1) A Sky box (and specifically a Sky box, yes?). Are these only available from sky?
    2) A card for the sky box from the UK, at a cost of £20
    3) A satellite dish, which can be sourced easily online. How easy are these to install?

    1) A Sky box (and specifically a Sky box, yes?).
    A non sky box will have ITV1 ITV2 C4 and C5 missing
    2) Are these only available from sky?
Nope some "independent" dealers will sell you a Sky digibox
    Try simplydigital.co.uk or satellite.ie
    2) A card for the sky box from the UK, at a cost of £20
Yes again without this you wont have ITV1 ITV2 C4 or C5
    3) A satellite dish,.....How easy are these to install?
A 60cm dish (sometimes called a "zone 2 minidish") isint TOO difficult but if youre going for DIY a signal meter is recommended (although not ABSOLUTELY essential)

Ok point taken but did the sticky thread not give you any ideas, anyway to answer your questions.

    1. sky digiboxes are available from retailers and places like ebay, good make are pace and panasonic, avoid grundig

    2. sky cards can only be obtained from sky , freesat only using UK address, also ebay but you are taking a chance in the latter case

    3. pretty straight forward, a satfinder is useful but it really depends on your own experience with this type of thing.

    Hope this helps
