I'm going to move this to the Work Forum, more people should be able to answer your questions there :)

give your employer your pps number, (if you dont have one, ring the tax office and they will forward it to you, they might tell you over the phone).

wait around 4-6 weeks, andit will mysteriously turn up in your bank account, or by check, if you get paid in cash.

Assuming you don't have a P45 from a previous employer, I don't think giving your PPS to your employer is enough, you need to phone the tax office.

Ring the tax office, tell them who your employer is (if you can ask your employer for their registered tax number thats even better), the tax office will then send a copy of your tax cert to your employer and to you. The problem at the moment is that you have no tax cert so you are on emergency tax.

If the form you got is your tax cert then you shouldn't need to do anything. It should all get sorted in your next pay packet (the tax owed to you will be added back). Theres no harm in phoning the tax office to double check everything is in order though....

If they're chargin you emergency tax then your employer doesnt have your PPS number. Whatever else you do you have to give it them or you'll keep getting charged emergency tax...

On the other hand I used emergency tax as a form of saving a few years ago. I was working a part time job and was on emergency tax the whole time. About four years later I managed to get 500E tax back which fueled most of a holiday to Spain... :D

You need to claim tax back from the tax office from emergency tax periods. This can take a while. You can make claims for upto 5 or 6 years back I think.

They will have all of your employment details on record anyways.

I didn't say I was working in that job for those four years did I?

Zillah - the OP does not need to give the PPS to the employer. If I am understanding correctly, the correct tax cert has been sent to him. That means that a copy of the tax cert has also been sent to the employer - therefore they have all the information they require.

Nesf - if the emergency tax is for the current tax year it will be sorted out in the next pay cheque. It only needs to be claimed if the tax year is over.

Solitaryman - the best thing to do is to phone the tax office, check your details are correct and check that they have forwarded a copy of your tax cert to your employer.

It should actually say the at bottom of the tax cert that your details have been forwarded to your employer: ____________
