    Looking forward to next week!

When i first saw Tabula Rasa.. it didn't really strike me as a brillant episode!

But possibly because it's between the brillant 'Pilot' and one of my favourite episodes of the series, 'Walkabout'

I'd rate the episode as good but not excellent, to be honest!

PS - the scene at the end with the Joe Purdy song is truly fantastic though!!

For anyone wondering what Tabula rasa means (as I did): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula_rasa
"Tabula rasa (Latin: "scraped tablet", though often translated "blank slate""

I assume it is referring to Kate's "clean slate" on the island.

    I can't believe I missed it! :(

In fairness I think the series could've done without that. Fuck all plot development as far as I could see (but I'm sure I'm overlooking some horrendously important bat of an eyelid that the series will hang on in a later episode). Like shite you didn't want to know what Kate did Jack. Just let her tell you, then tell her you don't care and your impenetrable moral fibre stays intact. If she boiled her granny in fresh cat entrails I think you'd be a little reluctant about the whole clean slate business.

I have a feeling Jack's line ("Three days ago we all died") when referring to the clean slate will have some sort of significance

Try... I dunno... watching it sober.... :)

Beruthiel: no point really explaining what happened cos it's a show where you have to see some of the subtelties to pick it up... Last night you won't have missed much really though... Try getting a cousin to send over a tape ¬_¬

Previously on Lost: Plane crash, drug stash, Marshal Shrap sustains a gash. Polar bears in tropic climes, Kate's committed nameless crimes. The Iron Giant kills and maims! Backgammon's a better game! Jack the Hero saves the day! Pleas for rescue en français!
    Now that... that is genius...

I dunno, it must be just me, but unless next week's super-hyped episode (from both here and friends in the States) is vastly better than what I've seen so far I'm giving up on the show. The only characters that even remotely make me curious are the Koreans or wherever the Asian couple are from. The rest I just couldn't care about.

Hate to sound cheesy and all!....

.. but the characters in 'Lost' are it's backbone. If you don't care about them, you won't enjoy the series!

People who have seen the series in full would probably agree with that statement.

PS - "Walkabout" is an absolute gem of an episode! The Futon Critic (a well reputated TV critic site) gave has 'Walkabout' as the best episode of any TV show in 2004. But i stand by my comment regarding caring about the characters.
    1. "lost: walkabout"
    (originally aired october 13, 2004)

Just a flat out flawless piece of writing, directing and acting as the backstory of the mysterious Locke (a wonderful Terry O'Quinn) is revealed..
.. Nothing is more exciting as a TV viewer than being genuinely surprised and "Lost" does that (and more) on a regular basis.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,668 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hyzepher

Lost is about two things - the characters and the subtleties. The characters are developed over the entire series so you need to put in some tim eto get the most of of them. The episodes are clever but the 'big bangs' - plot wise - are controlled to make more of an impact. It's not a show like 24 where there is a thrill a minute. the story evolves over the entire series (and beyond)

Given the limited environment, i.e. there's only so much you can do with an island, I agree that the series has to be predominantly character driven. However I don't particularly care about any of them yet and nor am that interested in their secrets, apart from the Asian couple. I'll watch next week and let you know what I think, but I've been glued to series that other people couldn't get into so it might just be my turn to wonder what all the fuss is about.

Like someone else said, the characters are drawn out over time, after this many eps you dont really know much about them, you dont even know why Kate was arrested and
you dont actually even find out this season
IMO,the rest of the characters have a far better back story than the Koreans.

You have to watch the whole season to get a feel for the characters.

also, there is A LOT more they can do on the island than you think ;)

Lads, maybe it's just me, but shouldn't this thread have absolutely NO spoilers for upcoming episodes beyond "Tabula Rasa"? It seems unfair that there's a few bits above that will wreck episodes 12 and 22 for those who are watching on RTE TWO.

Might it be worth suggesting that IRL: threads contain nothing from the future episodes, spoilerified or not?

I know a lot of us we're discussing these early episodes over on the monster thread, but if we're going to do so now (with the benefit of foresight when watching these early episodes), we should probably do it in another thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Good point, didn't realise this was a thread for such an early episode. Post removed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

finally saw it last night, tbh kate's backstory bored the hell outta me, that along with an awful beggining(discussion about the signal/monster/pilot) made a pretty mediocre episode, although kate's 'put your gun back in your pants' innuendo, was hilarious :D .

the only thing that saved it in my view was Locke & Sawyer, both of whom were excellent this episode, Sawyer during that marshall shooting scene was flawless, definitely seeing a different emotional side to him than usual.
Locke's performance was wonderfully underplayed, especially the whistle scene, and you gotta love someone who lets someone else take credit for what they did(i.e getting vincent back for michael to give to walt).

also wtf was with charlie ? was he still coked off his head from the last episode, he was incoherently mumbling every scene he was in. also sayid was ridiculously preachy this episode giving that cliche 'hopes and dreams' speech

its really weird how my preferences for characters are changing and in some ways i wish we didnt learn the characters backstories, because i like the fact that they're all so mysterious and multilayered(especially Jin, Sawyer & Locke)

    We saw
her involved in a bank robbery and a car-chase from the police, and we know the guy at the farm turned her in (for $23,000). What are we missing still?

we still don't know what she did to begin with!

Hold on...then whats the point in spoiler tags at all? If people do not want to know, they dont read, its simple! But some people like to read spoilers. There is no point in having spoiler tags in a thread that has "spoilers" in the title,so I would imagine the spoiler tags are exactly for threads like these. We have seen these eps but we still would like to discuss them now that we are seeing them again...which involves spoilers! :P

No, i think it's fair that any "IRL:" threads should contain no spoilers for future episodes.

Cos it's clearly stated that the thread is for discussion of "Tabula Rasa" and it may contain spoilers for those who have not seen "Tabula Rasa".

If you wanna discuss it regarding future episodes, make a "US: Tabula Rasa" thread.

..which I think should involve discussing it in a separate thread. Yes, some people read spoilers, and but spoilerifying them here means that the grey boxes will always end up referrring to future episodes.

People who have seen future episodes but still want to discuss the early ones would be better off discussing them away from those who are solely watching on RTE, in order to allow discussion and speculation (some people may want to grey-box other material like magazine quotes) to continue as if no future information existed.

I think that's the only right and fair way to treat newcomers to the show.

Someone could have easily accidentally highlighted some of the boxes above, on the basis that while this thread definitely contained spoilers for those who had NOT seen 1x03, it wouldn't, presumably, also contain information on episodes past that.

    Future-spoilers removed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

Another reason not to include future spoilers here is cos if you subscribe to a thread and get the email telling you there have been further posts, any spoilered text won't automatically be greyed out, so there's a fair chance someone could read something like, "Kate used to work for NASA" by accident. (She didn't, folks, that was just an example.)

As a complete aside, she did however used to do phone chatlines. Well, Evangeline Lily did advertising for them anyway - check out the cast's previous roles at: http://www.lost-mm.com/video/enl1117.wmv (7MB)

    Future-spoilers removed.

LOL - I loved your replacement above.

We should set up a single thread for this though (discussing previous episodes now we've seen all the later ones.)

Wouldn't even need individual per episode threads; I would have thought a single one titled something like

"US: Season 1 discussion ** CONTAINS SPOILERS/DISCUSSION BASED ON THE ENTIRE SERIES **" would do it.

    Exactly right!
It is no fun speculating about what is happening and then having someone butt in who has seen the entire series and proving you wrong.
Some examples that weren't exactly spoilers spring to mind:
Someone mentioned the "creature" could be a dinosaur, and was immediately told it wasn't. Someone else mentioned the scars on people's faces, and was immediately told they were intentional. These kind of remarks take a lot of the fun out of it for us Lost newbies, and it would be appreciated if they were kept for the US thread.

sorry,I think thats ridiculous,if you do that you will end up with a crap load of threads you dont need, look the Desperate Housewives forum on the channel four boards, over run with too much crap and too much of the same topic.

    But hey...thats just my opinion

I also think you must be pretty stupid to "accidently" highlight the spoiler text :P

Maybe we should ask Steve if it's possibly to divide the forum into an Irish section and a US section.

Like subforums inside the Lost forum (take for example the 'Films' forum has the forums for 'Films Awards' and 'Film Reviews').

Steve, is this within your power and d'ya think it'd be a feasible solution?

No point in subforums... I think it's just common sense that a thread entitled "IRL: something" should only include discussions on Irish episodes...

I'm gonna sticky a post about this...

Actually, it was you who said it, and not in spoiler form either:

and its not a damn dinosaur!

this show is fecking 100000000000 times better than Desperate Housewives that a lot of people seem to watch!

Fair enough it wasn't on this thread - I must have remember incorrectly.
Nevermind, but to the question at hand. We don't need a US and IRL forum - separate threads should be enough. Each IRL episode thread should not contain any spoilers IMO. Anyone who has watched the episode should be able to read the thread without spoilers about what's going to happen - leave that to the US threads.
