Especially since they give them out at supermarkets.

They make me think everyone is peering through their curtains watching each others house. Seriously though I don't think an area is any safer just because they have these community alert signs. Do they only have them in the country?

tthey used to have garda siochana neighbourhood watch signs in dublin.
siochana seems to have been dropped and nobody gives a ratsass about their neighbours anymore

I actually reckon they says our community is weak, (we don't have a local guard) as many small rural areas don't, they are generally a waste of time although they gives some older people a false sense of security. The best deterrent is a hurley at the bottom of the stairs, and belt away at any intruders. A good cross hungry dog also helps, (preferably with rabies). CCTV is the main deal for cathing intruders and spying on people, whichever you prefer !

There's local Gardai walking the streets here where I live (Dublin).
They do 2 rounds at least every day... and there's cars driving about a few times a day too. And, no... I don't live in a scummy area.
    Tiz a nice quiet suburb.
I feel quite safe in my area and I do reckon there is a feeling of community, but then again it is quite and oldish area... most of the ppls here are elderly or rapidly approaching it... different values I spose :)
