New Job & have to inform them about a months holiday!

I have just been offered a new full-time job, and have signed the contact. 6 months probation period. I will be starting the end of June

The problems is, that when I went for the job I did not mention that I have already booked and paid for a 4 week holiday for the month of October.

Any suggestions on how I would go about telling them? Obvoiusly i will have to take a large amount of unpaid leave. How long will I leave it before I tell them. Will I wait til I start in June?

Dont need to be told that i should have mentioned this before accepting the job! I didnt want to risk not getting the job over it.

    Thanks, N.

Seems like you know the answer to this already.
You should have been upfront about this.
I was in a similar position before christmas, i had an interview for a job but i'd also arranged a holiday for 2 weeks in january prior to the interview.
The interview was going well, so i thought it best to mention the fact that i needed the time off there and then.
It was fine, i got the job and had my time off.

You need to tell them as soon as possible.

They could very well tell you to feck off.

How important is this job to you?
October is a long way off, would you really lose that much money by cancelling?
How about even shortening the holiday, by way of a compromise.

4 weeks is a long time to take off in one go.
It would be all of your annual holidays.
If they let you take unpaid leave that would help, actually seeing as you're starting in june, you'd only really have 10-11 days holidays.
And you're not taking into account time off you're likely to want over Christmas.

Job is very important. Big step in the career. The exact area I want to go into, that is why I didnt say anything in the interview to jepordise it.

Im heading to Thailand for the month, cost me 700 euro for flights and will loose the lot if I cancel it!

I was told by loads of people not to apply for a new job til november, but the old one was driving me in to an early grave.

Might have a chat with the girl in the recruitment agency about it and see if she can give me some ideas!

There aren't any ideas to give you.
You really just have to come straight out and tell them.
    There's no way around it.
The longer you leave it, the worse it's going to be.

Get in contact with whoever hired you.
Explain to them that you really wanted to get this job but that you didn't want to jepordise your chances.
And hope that you can work something out.

If it's really so important then you may have to bite the bullet and forego the holiday.

    Yea, suppose you are right!!

Will get on to it monday...

Bad move I think, if you do tell them they are going to be mightily pissed off. If it really is what/where you want to be, I'd consider losing the 700euro or maybe going for 2 weeks (a reasonable holiday) instead of four, and lose half the 700euro... 4 weeks will not look good

You made a desperate decision not telling them during the interview process, and if you do tell them now, I'd imagine things will not go good for you... :)

Definetly not cancelling the holiday, have been planning this trip for over a year.

I'll sort it out monday. Sure if I dont get the job, it's not the end of the world - apparently there is a job boom in the IT industry anyway!!

    Eh.

    Priorities mate.

    Career or holiday?

I'd go with career, because I can always go on holidays later. But then, I believe strongly that someone should travel for a year before they start on a career path. Get out there, see the world, have some fun.

Then go back and do the grind.

That said, doing what you want to do can hardly be critised. As I said it's all about priorities.

However, if I had hired you on a 6 month contract and you'd "forgotten" to mention a month's holidays that you had planned, it wouldn't be pretty. This would have been so much simplier if you told them upfront about it. Now, you are in a tough position where, you should have told them but didn't. Not good.

Personally, I'd probably just cancel the holiday and pretend nothing to the company. Thailand will be there in 2 years time etc

Its not a 6 month contact - its a full time position, with 6 months probation period. Hence, they can fire me within 6 months for no real reason!

Hmm thats different then. I thought you took on a 6 month contract while planning to be out of the country for one of those months. That would have been a bad idea.

Eh, I'd talk to them about it, but you might be forced to choose between the job and the holiday. Make sure you know which is more important to you before you talk to them.

Have a long hard think about it.

    Thanks nesf.

Been thinking about it since I got offered the job. Will obviously have to give up the trip to thailand if needs be. The job unfortunatly is more important that a holiday!

Will let ye know what happens!!

Some employers are very accomodating when giving time off. Conversely there are a lot of companies where you would have trouble getting a full month off with any kind of notice (regardless of a probation period).

I certainly wouldn't be impressed if I found out someone I interviewed had knowingly concealed a planned trip. Even if they do agree to you taking time off, it might give a very poor first impression.

Well I bit the bullet and told the company.

They were really understanding about it. Said no problem, but obviously will have to take unpaid holidays for it.

I’m completely shocked!...think I’m going to like working there!!

Thanks for all the advice, it really gave me the shove I needed to tell them.

I'm glad to see you have such an understanding employer. Also, you have a few months to settle in beforehand and a couple of months to make up for any inconvenience caused by your time off so it shouldn't linger too strongly in peoples minds.
