    Hi All
Just a quick note of information for Ipod users, If you want your Ipod in car do not use the crappy Itrip things, purchase the Dension IceLink system taylord to your car. I just bought one this week from the UK over the net,(google them, there not hard to find) and installed the unit in about 25 mins, you can control the Ipod from the Car radio or the remote control unit on the steering wheel.

I now have a nice 15gig 3rd gen ipod hook directly into the car stero and it sounds great. :D

    what you get,
All cables needed, plus link to enable charge as you play.
a nice Stand again taylord to the car.

you have to download a small mp3 config file and the ipod self configs to the car radio. happy days.

just thought ipod users could use this if interested in taking there tunes in car.

i went to essentialipods.co.uk not bad service but not great, decent enough price 174 STG with Brodit(spelling) mount for my Renault Scenic which places the Ipod on a mini stand on the left of the gear stick just below the Radio.

When not in use just take the ipod and hid in the car.

the only thing that makes it easy to use is if you set up your own playlist on Itunes. this made life a lot better for me but also i set the unit up so I can control the ipod from the Apple UI instead of the Dension UI as it was better i thought.

Mounting the unit was ok but the package instructions were not great. Took a few mins to work out what to do with the left over parts.

The pay off though as before is great sound and easy user interface

i'm glad you managed to install in 25mins .. I have heard of a professional installer taking an hour and a half with one and volvo s40.

Mind you it is a quality bit of kit and well worth the money. When I change the car in the new year it will be first on the shopping list and I can get rid of the iTrip (still a great buy for about 30 quid).

Hi Matey, theres no reason on the planet why this unit will take any mre than 30 mins to install, its a matter of conecting a few wires together and then one plug into the head unit, simp, the mount was put on the dash in a few mins and mp3 config takes seconds to config the head unit also.

also worth noting that the IceLink can be moved from car to car you would only need purchase a new "Through piece" that conenct to your new head unit and then download the new config file.

also look into http://install.dension.com there some install information here,

If you can do without the controls through the head unit, you can wire your iPod to the head unit and a charger for less than €50, using the original dock and your ashtray as a receptacle.

I was just looking at that i-trip thing. Am I right in saying that it allows you to play songs on your I-pod through your car stereo without any wires? Whats the catch?

Wow, that must be one of the very first iPods. Didn't know they were around back then..

    Bakelite model?

The catch is average to poor reception as you drive through different areas and higher battery consumption. Other than that they are THE gadget for the iPod - brilliant for avoiding the Venga boys while holidaying on the continent.

Oh, and you cannot buy them in Ireland or the UK due to FM licensing restrictions.

It's the 32kb Jimi Hendrix special edition model. Made from dralon and Hemp, using vinyl as the storage medium. Not quite as cool as the 4GB black U2 one, and all the tie-die paint job bleached out of the plastic on mine. The sound quality is a little crackly.

Still, you don't see them often.....

Can anyone recommend something similar for the Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox and a Mazda 6? It only has a CD player so casssette adapter is out of the question.

ST, what kind of head unit do you have, is it a built in one ? You may have an AUX connection on the back and if you do you can just buy a 3.5mm jack plug that will connect to your head unit. Only today I bought one for €20 for my own car and now the head unit treats my iPod as an additional CD player. The only thing I can't do is control or charge the iPod from my head unit but I can live with that.

Why? Is it possible for you to turn 98FM into your personal Rock Station?

    Jip,

Its a built in Mazda Head unit, and from any searching I have done, it seems that there is no AUX input, to check this out
i will need to remove part of the Dash to get at the back which I only want to do as a last resort. I was hoping someone with a Mazda might have done something like this before.

this is what i have, I have a 12v outlet inside my armrest and can put the whole thing out of site, no worries about forgetting to remove it in some shopping centre carpark, 107.5fm is a good frequency to broadcast on

No, as the 98FM Signal is too strong for the little transmitter in the iTrip to overcome. But technically you are broadcasting FM (even if it is only for the 10ft around you) so you need a license. They were sold here for a while, then the UK ComReg banned them there so we banned them 10 minutes later. Saves us a fortune in decision making, this knack of catching a cold when the UK sneezes.

    Hi,
    Re ;iTrips pros and cons;
I had an iTrip, the 'old' type that you could use on 88 fm frequency. This is THE ideal frequency,as I travel around the 26 counties a lot;I have tried most permutations.
Anyway ,I upgraded from a 20G Photo to a 30G Video version recently($300 in Apple Store in US-€80 cheaper than here) and I also changed to the new iTrip(with digital display..etc) -as the old one doesn't work with Video iPod.The problem is the frequencies only start at 88.1 which is only OK.
Can anyone suggest an iTrip type solution? -as I really don't want to fit a Dension type system ,as they seem pricey and a lot of work, especially as in my new Volvo S40,the actual radio is located at rear of car and dash area design limits location of brackets etc,as even fitting a phone was not easy.
    Any suggestions ,please?

I just bought a car that had the Belkin auto kit installed/included. You need aux input (or any input lead that you can run from a 3.5 walkman jack) on your stereo, and it's basic - use the ipod itself for controls, but it sounds good, and it's cheap enough.

I have a Mazda 6 as well the model with the built in Bose stereo. Has anyone managed to fit one of the Dension IceLinks to one of these? I found a couple of articles that say connecting something to the Aux port means the CD changer won't work so I didn't want to risk it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

If you have an aux on the headunit it should take a standard audio jack connection one end in the aux of the radio other end in the iPods headphone jack. You play the iPod by selecting song on iPod and choosing aux on your radio.

Many of the dice denson kits take over the cd changer connections( if you have one) this means the iPod replaces the cd changer.

99.9% of the time if you have an aux in spare on the headunit, no it will not take over your cd changer as this is a different source
