Pay off my debts, start a snooker / pool hall (thought could maybe even top €1m for that alone!) and probably build my dream computer... and one each for my brothers and mam as well. Hmm, €1m doesn't get ya much in this feckin' country. Though I suppose if I doubled it I might be able to afford car insurance...

    Fantasy:
Live the rest of my life between my beach hut in thailand and my shack in a louisianna byou playin guitar until i die drinkin beer and moonshine from a jug.

    Reality:
Buy a load of crap i dont need and feel guilty when i see a concern add.
A few more guitars and maybe a gaf if i was feeling really sensible.

    To be artistic:
make my million euro pile in the middle of a large room, climb to the top of a ladder and take a dump on it from a height.*

    *Please excuse vulgarities

Buy 5 or more houses all "on the pump" with minimum deposit, 1 nice to live in, and 4 to rent for paying the 5 mortgages.
Update my '97 Impreza to a newer-ish model.
Put at least a €100 G's in my baby daughter's trust fund.
Stash the rest in Jersey/Guernsey/Caimans/... [p-p-p-pick a fiscal haven].

[Spot the sensible mid-30s guy, here] :o

Get 200,000 five euro notes, and tape them to my body.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I'd clear my debts, quit my job, hand each of my direct family members 50k (except my little brother, his would go into trust til his 21st birthday) load 50,000 into a credit card and take off on a round the world trip with that, leaving well over 700,000 invested in a nicely spread portfolio of property/shares/bonds etc. to ensure I've something to return to.

    Buy food.

I'm a student with no money and I'm starting to get hungry as I haven't eaten in a few days.

Read it again, he said he would take out mortgages on them, so he would only need about €35k deposit for each house = Roughly €175k, but to be honest - it's rare for the monthly rent to exceed the monthly mortgage, so there would still be expenses.

One thing I definitely wouldn't do is leave it in a deposit account, yes it would be gaining interest at a rate of 3% or so per year, but with inflation at around 3.5%, your money would be losing value.

As Sleepy said, the best option and what I would probably do too is invest in a diversified portfolio of shares, property, bonds, etc

Would the bank actually let you do that?

    Why wouldn't it?

@ Repli - so long as it breaks even @ realtime (e.g. both [+] & [-] follow inflation) through the duration of the mortgage and market doesn't sneeze, it's a (small but sure) winner. Winner would be a rapid-repay account -type mortgage (e.g. Virgin 'One Account') fuelled by earnings from the rest of the pile of moolah... Funny how your (daily-calculated) m'gage interests come down when there's €100k or so sitting in your R-R a/c :D = mortgage repaid in half-the-time at no xtra cost (coz m'gage interest calc'd on m'gage value - 'appreciating' €100k) ;)

Deposit account is wayyyy out of the question...BUT - you should see the 'interesting' rates (current and boggo-standardo savings a/c) you can get in some non-IE jursidictions ;)

Seems like a large risk for the bank to just hand 5 mortgages to someone with no experience of handling money, just because they've won a large amount of money. Who's to say they wont squander it in a year.

Be differant if they'd amassed it through a combination of savings/investments.

i find it very frustrating that all of you just want to buy
houses cars pc's, things you think make you happy but they wont.

ireland is probably one of the most materailistic nations in the world
all you can think about is yourselves and how to make yourself happy

    ever heard of charities?
what about investing in renewable energy
using the money to lobby the goverment for change!!!

does anyone see the big picture?????
    tunnel vision ireland sucks!!!!!

If you are talking about just blowing it on something stupid (no pun intended). Apparently, some very well know actresses and supermodels are available nightly for a seven figure sum and a guarantee of complete confidentiality on your part.
