Animation as a career?

    'lo.

Maybe someone can help me out here.

Recently I went for my interview for an art portfolio preparation course. I was intending to go to NCAD, wanting to do Core year and figure out what field would suit me at the year's end.

While NCAD are really looking for Fine Art, I believed I would be able to develop those skills over the portfolio preparation year. Turns out that you really need to be at a high quality standard before you enter the preparation course. It was then (better late than never) that I realised then that NCAD really isn't my thing/worth it.

However, the interviewer's said that my style of art geared more towards animation. Although animation is something that interests me alot, I have never really thought of it as a worthwhile career. I mean, would I not have to move to America to be successful? Can the pay be good?

It's Ballyfermot or Dun Laoghaire that I'm eyeing at the moment. Ballyfermot have a two-week introduction to Animation summer course, which would be great, yet it has to clash with the Leaving Cert exams...

I know some animators (Del9) and they find it hard to make ends meet at the moment, although they've just recently got a big fat Arts Council grant. I know some other animators who work a lot but get good money from RTE making some show called The Aul Ones. It's an art profession so it's not amazingly paid - like fine art.

However, there's more money to be made in motion graphics - sort of animation combined with graphic design. Many big companies in Ireland making money out of that. Dynamo springs to mind.

I suggest you repost this thread on the forum at www.creativeireland.com - they'll help you out.
