Thats the machine we have. It's pretty good, no real complaints. Battery lasts about an hour if not using cd.

Only an hour?? That cant be right... My Dell is a much more high powered one with a full 3.06ghz P4, NOT the low power using centrino or mobile processor. And it even gets 4 - 5 hours depending on whats being done.

Still 699 regardless is a good price for any new laptop.

Since the best centrinos only get 4-5 hours I think you'll have to post the model number of your machine to prove that you're not talking absolute tripe mate. I have a 2.8 P4 desktop replacment and when new it only lasted about an hour. The celeron cpus have no power saving features. hence the poor battery life.

I know he said he didn't have the centrino models, but I use to do tech support for samsung notebooks, and some of their models had up to 8 hours battery life with the extended batteries. That was a centrino model though, with a extended battery.

Whats your point? How is a completely different laptop relevent?

I just got the Dunnes Dtores leaflet, it is slightly different to the one that is at http://www.gadot.info/hardware/lap.asp?id=23 the one on sale at the mo has DVD +/- RW Drive dual format double layer, Intel Celeron M360 and graphics are unicode intergrated and it has a 1 year collect and return all for €699 not bad

I had hoped that my point was clear. You had said the best centrinos only get 4-5 hours. I was pointing out that you were wrong.

Its a Dell inspiron 5150 not that it helps prove anything unless you have used one :D I use it all the time for watching movies (divx/xvid) on the TV. It can easily go for 4 hours non stop play back before gicing me a battery low warning at 30 mins estimated power left.

Maybe because i dont use it off the mains much so the battery is not always being overcharged. And if i do i tend to take the battery out. Otherwise battery life will reduce.

Oh on battery the laptop power halves

Mate bought one - He wanted something for his daughter in college. Configured it for him. Ideal for what he wants it to do. Battery lasting about an hour and a half, when online with wireless connection.

Also checked out dell to buy a similar lappy and it came in at €950, €250 yoyo saving. Only difference was Dell had Intel graphics, his has Unichrome.

    Definite bargain

Thats just being pedantic. Obviously I meant with standard batteries. (the batteries which are supplied in the base price) You can put two batteries in some laptops and double the battery life. So you're also wrong if you want to play top trumps ;) However discussing extended or dual batteries (which are expensive) is getting off topic when buying a €699 laptop. :) IMO.

AFAIK its not a desktop CPU. Desktop CPU's do not have the power saving functionality speedstep where the speed changes on battery power. Only mobile Intel Pentium CPUs have this feature. http://www.bay-wolf.com/speedstep.htm However your Dell Laptop could have some form of customised Dell bios/chipset that does a similar thing with a desktop CPU. I've never seen it myself. The 5150 I've used were all mobile P4's and they have an especially large battery as standard. Most reviews of it make note of the large battery. http://www.justechn.com/reviews/articles/2004/08/31/inspiron-5150.php

Does anyone know can u get a longer guarantee (3 yrs) on the dunnes laptop?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭secret_squirrel

Why? It will be on its last legs after 3 years. Battery will be fusced, lots of scratches and it will run Longhorn like a dog.

Anyone have a clue whether this is still on sale or what?

Well this was originally posted in May, so I doubt it.

I found this after, but was wondering on more of an update. Might just pick up the phone and give Dunnes a bell though...
