Anyone know their way around the inside of a PS2?

Ok, my PS2 stopped working ages ago. It started to report read errors, make grinding noises and scratch discs.

Thought I'd see what could be done with it so I opened it up and fixed the tray mechanism. It doesn't scratch discs anymore. It still refuses to read discs though.

A quick google told me two things:

    1. Some PS2 lasers are notorious for burning out.

Now my laser is very definitely on and trying to read discs, could it still be burnt out?

    2. It's possible to adjust the height of the laser using the clicky knob dealy on the tray mechanism.

I tried every single setting and this produced some interesting results. I tested each with an audio cd, assuming that would be the easiest type of media to read. It definitely seemed to be getting somewhere on some settings, the disc spun faster, the laser made less clicking noises. Unfortunately it still won't read any media.

I also gave the lens a good wipe.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this?

    Thanks :D

The exact same thing happened to my system. What the problem was that the drive (including the lens) was knackered and needed replacing. Works fine now but I ended up buying a slimline ps2 anyway.

Anyway I bought that ps2 near enough to launch and my friends were having similiar problems. It just wasnt built to last.

i had the same issue. i had a temp fix (only lasted a few weeks until the laser blew out and i had to replace it for €100ish). when you open it up, there should be a black plastic plate covering the cd-tray: take it off. now, there's a white gear at the top. that's the problem. it's tilting the tray funny, so (via trial and error), try to fix it (it's a bitch by the way). it could also be a little screw-like device at the side which moves the laser, give that a bit of a look too.

If it's a version 5 you will be better off getting a new PS2. Nobody sells the version 5 lasers anymore since they are notoriously bad and prone to these problems. Also to put in a new laser non v. 5 laser you need somebody to preform a hardware modification. The price of the new laser and modification is just over the price of a slimline PS2.
