I bought a 200GB external hard disk from ebay I have been trying to transfer about 5GB of files onto it but after a few GB the hard disk make a clcik noise and it stops transfering and kind of reboots. Before I get back onto the guy is this normal. Could it be overheating or anything?

    Thanks

It seem that the HD is just randomly disconnecting regardless if I am transfering files or not. It is very very annoying. anyone got any ideas?

    Is it firewire, USB, SCSI?

is the device losing power or is the usb disconnecting?

basically check all cables external and internal.
open the case and see if anythings loose.
if everything looks fine try another drive or try the external drive internally - its just a regular hdd in a case.

if its overheating run it with the lid off for a while and see how it fares.

check if power management is enabled on your usb root hub and disable that.

No it's not losing power and the USB cable isn't coming out. I've tried running it with the top of and it still stops working. Power management is off. I haven't tried running it internally because tbh I don't really know how that is why I bought an external one.

I have noticed that seems to do this more frequently the longer it is left on i.e. it takes a few minutes to hapen from when it is first turned on then it begins to hapen ecery 30 seconds or so. The drive doesn't fell that hot and It still does it.

The HD is a Western Digital 2000 and the case is Lyonware - Mobile.

I've tested it out without connecting it to the computer and it still makes the clicking noise that it makes just before it disconnects from the computer (If it is connected to the computer) so perhaps i can rule out the computer causing this?

Why not download drive testing software from the manufacturer & it will tell you if it's bad or not.
