Hey, can anyone recommend a decent heart rate monitor I could use when running and cycling?

Ive been told that Polar ones are the best, but all I need is the basic little watch with a chest strap. My budget is less than €80. Any ideas??

I think they are pretty much all the same. Ok if you pay more you'll get some more functions but that's about it. Lidl and Aldi occasionally do them too for nowhere near €80.

I do a really basic but sound model in Star Fitness, Arnotts for €50. Its made by timex and just tells you your heart rate and that's it. Personally if I had €80 I'd get an Oregon Scientific Smart Trainer, retails at €79. Has heart rate adjustable limits etc etc. Really good features the equivilant of a Polar f4 (€99). That siad I also have the Polar s150 (cyclists entry model) and I've just bought a brand new uber sweet Timex Bodylink System with Data Recorder, GPS, etc. Its so so good, I stood up my girlfriend by an hour just to test it out on a quick run! That's why I can type this right now. Stupid exercise, getting me in trouble like that...

Boring sales pitch aside, your HRM depends on your requiremtns. If you don't need much you don't pay much. On the other hand, a good one gets you hooked on HRM training and then you end spending loads of money, and getting given out to by your girlfriend...

Also if you mention the post when your in I'll sort you out with a discount cause your on boards.

    Boru.

I got a basic one for €10 on ebay incl shipping from UK
tells the time, gives you your rate, highest lowest, you can set warnings when you cross either band
pretty much does everything I would need...

In fairness to Boru, I picked up one of the Oregon HRM's in Arnotts and he did give a discount. Thats a year ago and its working fine.

I got a Suunto X3 HR on e-bay for €80 euro two weeks ago. My old polar died and the suunto has user replaceable batteries.

Yes polar is worth the money if you are training for running or cycling races.

I got a polar S720i for 275 sterling 2 years ago and it is the best piece of equipment I ever bought.
You can upload graphs of your cadence, heart rate, speed and altitude.against eachother. It records everything.the range of functions are great
The altitude is surprisingly sensitive.Any slight incline will even show up.The altitude isnt accurate in a real(its pressure sensitive) way but its relative accuracy is amazing.
If your just keeping fit any yolk will do
