I was just reading Trinity's list of internet services and it says no instant messengers are allowed. Is this actually enforced? Otherwise, I will never have afforable contact with my family in the U.S once I start in October.

Last i recall you should be able to get msn through the http proxy, i'll double check it tomorrow..

It depends where you are in College. The computer science department makes extensive use of MSN so that postgrads and academics can keep in touch. I imagine that their machines are messenger friendly.

The regular proxy servers used to handle internet traffic don't normally allow IM clients to be run in the default, but I'm sure there's a work around for that too. Perhaps running MSN through a http proxy rather than a socks proxy [apologies if this is gibberish].

Webmessenger.msn.com is accessible throughout college, as well as certain other Instant Messaging services. As well as that, I think you can get Skype to work within college. Last I heard anyways!

    And enforced? Nah...

god arn't we all efficent tonight,

Last time i checked the newest versions of msn and amsn when using a http proxy don't use the connect method and the traffic looks fairly transparent compared to normal http traffic. So unless ISS are actively blocking msn it should work(wouldn't be hard)

Not as far as I've heard n anyway. We use msn, yahoo or those multi ones. Kev is the king of instant messengers. He knows which do what and what put which ones together etc. Will you be using the college computers or connecting your own laptop to the network?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭Enigma365

    http://www.e-messenger.net
Web versions of MSN Messenger, AOL IM, and Yahoo IM.

There are also web versions of MSN and AOL on their respective sites, I do believe.

There is an ICQ web version on icq.com although I don't think anyone uses ICQ anymore.

Not as good as the actual full version applications(which generally cannot be used in tcd) but they do the job fine. I've been using them for years in college without any hassle from ISS who I doubt even care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Skype seems to come and go - one of my roommates can get it to work sometimes but the other guy can't use it at all.
You can use MSN and AIM on the network, you just need to mess around with the proxy settings. It's fairly easy to set up. Haven't been able to get Trillian working, though.

Last time i checked how trillian deals with http proxy's is to attmempt to use the connect method(iirc) which isn't allowed on the tcd proxies so it fails.

Apparently theres a cockup in the lines somewhere within ISS. no ones quite sure whats causing it and ISS arent too arsed about fixing it. for instance to ssh into matrix from certain computer labs, you have to go through another box in college. and you cant reach the cs.tcd.ie servers from the wireless either *boggle*

as for the DUCSS server, its been bought and is gonna be up and running come freshers week.

Possibility of matrix getting replaced too.

The problem currently exists with routing between cs/hpc/maths and iss...... iss are looking into the issue... until recently they thought it was likely a result of maths being reconnected away from its fibre link. But focus has shifted elsewhere now....

(having the entire college as one big subnet has its downsides...)

Haven't they had it for ages now? just not brought it into col?

Proposals i've heard about that seemed a lil dodge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

the DUCSS server is in the room now - was bought about a month back or so i think with Joes credit card....thats all i know on that end.

as for Matrix, it all depends on how things go next year with funding and freshers week signups etc.
