External Hard Drive

    Hi All,

I'm looking to buy an External Hard Drive for my Dell Laptop, the laptop itself is a couple of years old and is only an Inspiron 1100. It has limited potential but it does what I need it to, i.e. play poker and keep backups of my important cds etc.

The problem I have is that it only has an 18GB hard drive on it, so I need to get additional storage.

What external hard drive would you recommend and how easy is it to install and use? Any that I should avoid, or what do you use yourself?

    Appreciate any help given.

Would you not just buy a new laptop HD, and install Windows back onto it?

Alternatively, go to Marx Computers. They can sort you out with a really tiny USB box, into which you can put another laptop hard drive, which they will also supply.

I have a Maxtor 160 Gig drive bought from Komplett. The don't seem to stock it anymore. It is a very good drive, that never gave me any trouble. It also make backking up easy, with a backup button located on the front. You may need to get a USB2 card for your laptop (I had to) to make full potential of the drive. As the other poster said, why not get a new internal one? Although they're a bit expensive...

Well even my other suggestion actually contains a laptop drive. Expensive, but nice & small.

You'd be surprised how much you will hate having to carry an accessory around with you everywhere. I know someone that got a new laptop in favour of having to carry around an external mic & speakers. It's a high initial investment, but it really pays off.
