Without a doubt, the finest radio show EVER to grace the airwaves of Dublin. It was some of the funniest radio I've ever heard.

I still listen to my Openline tapes that I recorded. :D

Is there any chance of it making a comeback?? Greg was a great host, did he get out of the radio game altogether??

Barnaby's "Boozin'" was probably the shows best tune. Notable moments include Barnaby taking the entire crew hostage...loved it! :D:D

BTW was Tony played by Jim Jim from The Strawberry Alarm Clock? They do sound similar!!!

    OMG yes!

It was brilliant alright. The songs were class, but all the different characters were the best. I was a few myself...

Bringing it back would only taint the memory.
    Let it be.

As much as I miss it I agree with Makaveli. So many nights did I stay up to listen to that show. I've lost most of my tapes but I still have a minidisc of most of the songs. Great stuff.

Best show on radio ever. Who was the DJ again? Has he done anything since?

    You fooilz

Twas Greg Merriman. He sounded like Gerry Ryan's lovechild. I dunno what he's doing now though, anyone else know??

Ah Greg Merriman, that's the one. I'd say it was great fun to work on :)

Anyone have any of the songs saved on computer? They were class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

That show used to keep my up when I should have been sleeping for school. That was a great show. Defo should bring it back. There's no real good shows on the radio anymore. Mary Shocklates..

I remembre he played a song and the lines went something like "oh, here comes Santa with his sack of shiit, and all his stinkin reindeers" Was so funny.

He hated people calling him Gerry Ryan sound-a-like. Dunno where he's gone though. :( Come Back!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

He said on the last show that he wasn't doing any more DJing. He didn't say what he was moving into but it wasn't radio.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 362 ✭✭ThatBloke

Man this is bringing back memories, keep them coming :D I remember him saying one time that he had a day job so he probably went back to that.

I'd be surprised if the people behind it didn't go on and do something else in the media. It was a unique show at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

Yea, but it was hardly helping FM104. They probably get more listeners from whatever crap they have on now at 1am. Shame, but I agree that bringing it back would be a bad idea. It was brilliant when it lasted, and it should stay briliant in memories (and tapes). I only have about 3 of them on tape. But I do have Boozing, and the one where Mary came clean on who (or what) she really was. Ah, good times..

I know a regular caller on the show(Trebor) and he was in touch with Greg by e-mail for a little while after the show ended. Greg's doing something incredibly normal/boring sounding, cant remember for sure but think he said he was working for Eircom.

    God, Eircom? Pity.

Only song I have on the pc is Barnaby's boozing.
Used to have them all in their crappy real media 16kbs quality.

I've noticed this as well, especially as Jim Jim puts on a very Tony-like voice the odd time.

I remember way back when the openline was an extension of the phone show. Then Tony rang up, it was a Halloween night many years ago. Thus started the legend of Tony Monkeychild and the openline as we now know it! I have a load of tapes of the show in my parents' house somewhere I think, I should have a root around if I get a chance.

Wonder what happened to the IRC regulars - DavidC, Stampy, JamCos and co.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

    Yes... I wonder.. ¬_¬

heh, no way. My old openline site still has a load of the songs on it.

    http://www.geocities.com/pegleg03/sounds.html

As for the IRC regulars I think 90% are probably regulars here.

Nero comes with a wave editor,so you can record mp3s, if you plug into the mic/line in socket at the back of the computer, you'll need suitable lead to go from yer headphones socket to your mic/line port though.

    Haven't a clue sorry.
The site has probably just got crappy code or something in it. I don't remember much about it last time I did anything to it was about 5 years ago. i was able to download the songs using firefox without any problems.

Just tried it in IE and it worked for me. It might be a geocities thing. Are you right clicking and selecting save target as or are you just clicking the links?

Do you have any Net Nanny type programs running?

I hate when the past comes back to haunt you. I did not need to be reminded that I was such a geeky teenager! I've deleted that site but I've saved the lyrics which I'll post here as an attachment later. I'll also see if I can transfer all the songs from MD to mp3 next week.

Jim-Jim from FM104 was the voices of Tony The Monkeychild, Barnaby Harmlessly and Benny Medina.

It just gave me a bit of a shock. The Openline memory will live on though, don't worry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Aye it's all a bit embarrassing.
Just deleted all the content on my site bar the songs page. Also cleaned up all the html so it should actually be viewable now.

I think we should get a petition going to bring it back! If it came back, in a new format, we'd have new characters, an outlet for potential comedians / radio broadcasters, and something decent to listen to after all the usual late night chat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

you could just re-start it by ringing into that "get it off your chest" slot with some wacky name and get some plot line going... the same way jim got the openline going (effectively)

anyone got tapes of the actual show? i recall the funniest one being about tv chat shows, which got ruined by that chick (forget her name... she always confused larger & langer) who "left"... ah, memories

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭Fabritzo

Great Idea! The best way to try and get that to work is if we all try it on the same night.... I'm talking about a number of us ringing at the same time so at least a few will slip through the net. Kinda like Ireland's first ever Radio Flash Mob. So who's in???

I would love for someone to upload some of the songs.
And Tony is definately jim jim,Tony sounds like when jim jim does Ronan Keating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Almost all the songs are available from the links on this thread.
    Just not very good quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭jonnybadd

A source i know to be very reliable has assured me that Jim Jim was infact the voice of many of the characters on that show, Tony and Barnaby for one, if i remember. I co-ran a fansite with Jamcos, never had the nerve to ring up the show itself but listened for many a happy happy night, sites long gone now but the memories remain

    It's pretty much idle.
I didn't think anyone got banned from it, maybe the access list just got messed up.
