    hi folks

    why cant i access the net with my (crap) dial up connection. when i dial, it beeps and makes noises (the modem) then i get a erroer code, like invalid handle or some crap.

    i didnt need any user name or password for eircom up to now (1850 192 192, i think is the number). i also tried esat bt and installed their 'free' package, but got the same crap.

    i installed tcp/ip again and no joy. my modem is working fine, i did tests on it..

    grrrrrrrrrr!!

    afaik you dont need a password for that, any will do like
    Ring eircom tech support?

    Try putting something in for the password. It might be throwing an exception if it's blank

    try:
    username = eircom
    password = eircom

    There could be interference on your phone line which is causing problems, by this I mean corrosion(such as caused by high winds or water ingress) at some joining in the wire between you and the telephone exchange. The phone would dial out but there could be noise in the line which would screw up data (modem is much more sensitive to this than a voice telephone). I'd say get Eircom or whoever to check the quality of your line.
    Oh and I agree also with Bob_bot's info. That's what I always use when on dialup.

    Take it as a sign to upgrade to broadband

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

    is microsoft family logon in network preferences ?...if so , remove it , and put back microsoft client for windows networks

    Eircom should work without the password anyhow

    send a screen dump of your network properties

    I'm presuming its a PC here and not a mac . please clarify

    If the line can't handle a dialup connection then it doesn't really bode too well for their chances of getting a bb connection though.

    i'll never get bb, i live in the sticks!

    firstly check the county setting on the modem , if it set to US or another country sometimes the handshake won't happen

    Seen an issue though with Eircom having a dodgy card in the exchange and getting them to reset your number at the exhange is a nightmare

    try removing the client for microsoft networks , seens a few odd issues with connection when this is at the bottom , untick packet scheduler just to be sure , again seesn issues here

    Then we go back to setting up a new connection to Eircom using 18892150150 testing this as it more reliable than IOL

    I that fails PM me And I can recommend a nixor or a company to check it out onsite for you

    if its TCP/IP stack related

    go to start run and type command

    at the dos prompt enter

    netsh int ip reset logfile.txt

    o try downloading this file and run it

    http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

    also if you have an active ethernet connection running , right click it and choose repair , this resets alot of network stuff also

    whole article is on

    Re install windows is your only option mate, im taking a guess and could be totaly wrong but most likely your pc is full of virus, spam and other harmful stuff that blocking you.

    Also reinstalling the driver for the modem would be no harm, and maybe try booting up windows in safemode with networking and try dialing then and see what you get.

    Can you dial your own mobile? Give it a shot. If it rings, let it do so till it goes into yout message minder. Then hang it up. Then ring it again, this time answer it and see does it hold the connection.
