Post up a link to the auction first. People that are new to Ebay sometimes fall for scams or people with hardly any feedback. Not that I'm saying you did, but it's good to see the auction so we can give feedback.

Have you signed up for Paypal yet? I presume you have a credit card?

    2 things:

Always look at their feedback from buyers and the individual items.
Have they sold phones before? were the buyers happy?

Using paypal is good because if they pull a fast one you can lodge a claim to get your money back.

yeah the feedback on ebay is an excellent source of peace of mind. ive never been caught out myself but phones would be a dangerous area.

    He has no feedback.
    I would be wary.
It doesn't mean he isn't legit, but looking at his other auctions, all he is selling is those phones. It looks a bit dodgy, and I wouldn't buy from him.

When buying off ebay I like to "suss out" the seller before I bid. What I'll do is email a question about the item or shipping. You can tell a bit about the seller by the way he replies and how quickly he replies. If he sounds helpful and replies quickly then he's probably OK. If he takes ages to reply and gives a one word response then that would put me off. Sometimes they don't reply at all.

It goes without saying that you should examine feedback very carefully. Also, be wary of sellers shill bidding to jack up the price. This is where the seller creates one or more extra ebay accounts and bids on his own item using them. If there is a bidding frenzy for an item a few well judged shill bids can make a good difference to the final price. If you see a lot of bids for an item and many of them come from accounts with zero feedback there could be some shilling going on but it's usually hard to tell. The best way to combat this is to know your max bid and stick to it, don't get involved in bidding frenzies.

The other side of this is you should be well clued in about the auction *before* bidding. In your case it seems that you bid on a paypal item without even having a paypal account or understanding what paypal was about. This would be considered bad form. Do not bid on an item unless you are 100% sure you want it and are 100% clear about the item description payment methods, delivery etc.
