How come it's a huge thing in the prequels that Jedi's cannot love as with Padmé and Anakin sending him on the path to the darkside yet in the older expanded universe it's known that Luke Skywalker marries Mara Jade?

    in a word: catholicism.

look at priests. it's considered evil to love, per se (you can only love god, as it were).

and the luke skywalker thing... well, the jedi are in a SLIGHTLY different state compared to the state of affairs in epI, II and III :)

Considering the Jedi had been almost wiped out by Ep6 I'd imagine the council (if they still existed) would have been actively encouraging Luke to spread his seed far and wide across the galaxy!

BUT FROM YOUR SISTER STAY AWAY YOU MUST ....... YOU DIRTY PERV!

That may be so, but Leia isn't a Jedi, even though the force is strong with her... And I've just realised that people aren't born Jedi, but yes, the force was stronger with Luke - why else would Kenobi and Yoda have trained him over Leia?

they couldnt train leia as she joined the Imperial senate when she was 16, and any training she received would have alerted vader/palpatine as to who and what she was. however luke was on a backwater well out of eye-shot.

the force runs equally strong in both, luke has just had more training, leia becomes more jedi like in the EU

Luke didnt get full teaching in the was of the force. What was right / wrong im sure that the sith would have destroyed all knowledge on Jedi teachings. Luke i would say had to wing it.

    Hmm yeah..

How do jedi spread in numbers if they're not supposed to have sex? Do midichlorians occur naturally?

they're in all living cells. you don't have to be the offspring of a jedi to become one.

but jedi offspring are more powerful. like thoroughbreds :P

Yes. I agree. However, bit of a blooper for you. Corran Horn is the decendent of a Jedi and it never seems to be a problem that his father/grandfather (not sure which) was married. Plus Corran himself is married and has had kids, and it's no biggie.

I think you can put it down to the fact that George Lucas doesn't read all the expanded universe stuff that's ot there (who can blame him).

One thing bothers me. Midichlorians allow you to use the force, yes?
If the Jedi don't get married and have kids, wouldn't people with high midichlorian counts die out. Unlike being a catholic priest, which isn't dependent on the number of midi-catholic-ans (ooh! clever pun!) it seems to me that jedi-ness would be an inherited trait.

Where does it say that Jedi can't marry? Perhaps they can if it is approved, but they wouldn't have approved of Anakin and Padme, or at least the fact that they acted without that approval?

Or maybe you just can't marry while you are serving, but you could train and then leave the council in order to marry.

Another similarity to the priesthood (I suppose they are priests in a way) and probably the best justification/most likely reason I've heard so far.
