What has using boards taught you?

Using boards, other online bbs's, mailing lists, etc, has taught me to carefully choose precise wording when in a debate. It's also taught me to be more politically correct on occasion (depending on audience). Actually, more generally, it's taught me about tailoring a message for different audiences. The above are meta-subjects (for want of a better term). I've also learned specific things, like how to use some devices, certain hardware, and some things about programming. I'm sure there's plenty more I can't think of right now.

I know there's a lot more to boards and other sites than just learning from them, but for now, how about answering: What have you learned from boards and other online discussion resources?

That no matter how well-informed, polite, and elegantly crafted one's opinion, there are always four other nutcases with all the social skills of a jackhammer on parole willing to post STFU with no reason straight afterwards.

No matter how long you spend writing a post, very few people will read it, fewer will understand it, and anyone that responds will have totally missed the point.

Also, the more pointless a thread is, the longer it will live.

Taking anything on a BB seriously is a complete waste of taking-things-seriously energy.

One of the main messages coming from boards.ie is that alot of us have far to much time on our hands at work.

Its a good place to have acccess to a wide community where generally someone may have some info about whatever it is you search for.

If you keep some of your posts vague, sometimes people won't argue with you that much... where other times they might.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,958 ✭✭✭Fobia

    I've learnt;

That most people on the internet are newbies, but that's ok.

That most kids/teenagers think that they're more mature than their age, and that they can pass as adults online when in fact they are smack on average (I was like this when I first joined boards, you only have to look at my original posts or an oldish log of #boards.ie to see how wrong I was :) ).

That common sense is something which most people don't possess.

That there is no hope for mankind.

That you're gonna have to serve somebody.

More recently, I've learned that people seem to judge their own newbieness by post count, rather than actual time or experience. This I find quite hard to understand...

Not just that, anyone post 98 or who didn't play quake (ie wasn't on the message boards which preceded this one) is a newbie :D

    Self-acclaimed newbie,

That I'm not interested enough to voice an opinion on a wide, wide range of topics.
I've also learned, unfortunately, that there will always be people that I don't like

i learned how to l33t sp34k. actually, my arguments seem to be better these days and in real life i speak more eloquently. but maybe that just coz ive matured. actually, im talkin sh*t. in real life my arguments usually go like:

person 1: whats that thing on the floor?
    Me: You're on the floor!
    person1: wat?
    me: ur a wat!
person 1: thats doesnt make sense!
    me: so does ur face!

oh i learned how to pirate stuff, and my knowledge of football has grown from the soccer forum.

Far too much than Ishould know on drugs
and as the OP said- to be vague to avoid arguments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

That if somebody finds the answer to your question as the first result in Google, they won't be happy.

And that you learn more stuff by reading what ordinary people have to say (rather than fancy websites) but you have to sift through a load of crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭Dimitri

that no matter what i have to say someone else has already said it!!

    I've learned that:

being nice isn't always the best policy.

    some people are insanely bigoted

some people really are just arseholes

the longer i'm on boards the less patience i have for new posters (to my shame)

there are people out there who will know the answers to your utterly inane questions

everyone hates been banned and feel slighted and aggrieved when it happens to them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,743 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

A lot of whats been said already.
Also its made arseholes more tolerable as on here theres a lot so you get used to it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

I've learned that a reasonable, thought out post will be more useful in the soccer forum than a ranting tirade.

Also that whatever subject you post on, someone else will be along who :

a ) knows more than you on said subject and will

    i) make you look a fool by pointing out your inaccuracies
    ii) try to educate you

b ) thinks they know more than you and :

    i) argues their p.o.v even though everyone else can see the folly
ii) accepts that you do know better and accepts what you say

c ) knows you know more than them and :

    i) accepts your p.o.v as correct and stands corrected
ii) continues in their ignorance, arguing with you.

I have been all of the above, but I try to be c)i)

Boards has taught me .. well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,743 ✭✭✭funk-you

    its taught me:
1 that there are actually real people out there and not just the front that people put up.
2 there are so many people with no common sense in the world but sometimes they surprise you with just 1 post.
3 people will nit-pick over symantics rather than the point.
4 grammar and spelling have no place on the internet.
5 people will generally help you out if you're not a complete arse.
6 every man and his dog plays the guitar.
7 there may be a slight ray of hope for the human race(i really thank you all for teaching me this)
8 no matter what your problem there is always someone better and worse off.
9 to be as open minded as possible and stay away from debating with the overly sensitive* PC type.
10 Some people are just w*nkers but the majority have their heart in the right place.

    Q.E.D.

I have learned that small nerds get very brave on the internet and often band together. If they dont have friends they log in as another user and say things like "Your the funniest person ever you must have loads of friends." Fair dues to them.

Boards is really handy if you have something you want to talk about or if you have a question no one around you can answer, with a few smart ass answers thrown in.
