just wondering if anyone has ever got a sudden headache after lifting heavy weights.

i was in the gym a couple of weeks ago and was squatting 120kg and i usually get about 10 and i was pushing hard and i got a really bad headache all of a sudden. i read up on it and i think its called a tension headache. it was a sharp pain at the back of my head (just above my neck)

i was wondering if this happened to anyone before and if so what did you do?

I'm not a doctor but I've read of two causes. One is, as you said from tension. Some people experience them after doing shrugs or other movements involving neck muslcles - for this reason it's possible you keep the bar too high up on your back, it should be rested below the thick part of the inner trapezius so the bar rests on the rear delts.

The other reason could be high plood pressure, either permanent or temporarily induced by not breathing properly. Many people herniate while doing movements like this by not breathing out a tiny bit on the contraction. Just use a sfigmomenometer (ha found a use for it!) and get your bp checked.

These two are the probs in many cases.
