Edit that poll to include Stargate :). The franchise has nine seasons under its belt - think it deserves an option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

dang ur right.dunno how i left it out.not sure how to edit poll tho...lol...n00blar to these boards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

I would have put down one of several written works that I've read and love, but hey, they're not in the poll. :p

So I picked Galactica, due entirely to there being no option for Firefly. Oh Kaylee, how you're hated by some. :(

    stargate pfftt... i'll add atlantis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Never saw Firefly myself. It was from Joss Whedon wasnt it but got cancelled after a few episodes?

I thought Farscape wud run away with this tbh.Surprising.

Farscape : 88 episodes + miniseries, big fantastic roller coaster thrill ride the whole way through
Battlestar: 13 episodes. Grim. I enjoyed it alright, but it's certainly no Farscape yet.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

Farscape for me... Battlestar is good but it's got a long way to go, as Stark put it so very well. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

    Voices of reason, thankfully ;)

BSG has a LOT of ground to make up b4 it can be rated above Farscape imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

    hehe

just after noticing the poll has been altered to include Atlantis.

    cheeky mod ;)

if ya can think of ne other possible contenders throw em up too seeing as how i dont know how/cant.

I liked Stargate Atlantis and The 4400.... Never got into Firefly or BSG.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 432 ✭✭Daelus

Firefly is brilliant, but I voted for Farscape. Although I've only just started watching it, I'm just about to finish season 1 on DVD.
    It's great so far.

I missed Battlestar in it's original run so I haven't seen that yet. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Was The 4400 good.Didnt manage to catch it at all.Ads didnt see that promising not that u shud judge a book by its cover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Inspector Gadget

Don't know what constitutes recent; I'd like to be able to shoehorn Babylon 5 in there, but if not, Farscape would be the one for me from that list.

The 4400 wasnt great now...but Id put Taken on that list even if it was only a mini series.

Babylon 5 ended a few years ago, so I assume that's why it's not there - otherwise it's an inexcusable oversight :)

Voted for Farscape here. I love BSG but, come on, we've seen 13 episodes only - too early to really judge.

Babylon 5 was incredible alrite.Jus thought it ended too long ago to include.

its remarkably close, very surprisng have to say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

I'd say Battlestar, I also liked Firefly a lot but BSG has the edge. I never really watched Farscape though, so I can't judge that. But BSG is the new B5, except I think it might end up being b-b-b-b-b-b-better. (I find it hard to say that, I loved B5 so very, very much).

Firefly for me. It was short but soooo sweet. I'd guess, depending on how serenity does, that we'll see it come back in about a year or so.

BSG, avoids the pitfalls of most sci-fi, whatever the medium by actually having characters with more than 1 dimension, well rounded tormented people, with ambitions, fears and flaws, everyone of them. It does not rely on special effects to fill in screen time, to bring along the fx freaks, yet the stuff they do use is some of the best stuff I have seen, with no exceptions.
The show seems to have taken an old rather rubbish tv programme and turned into, well, art.
On witht the next season, lets hope it doesn't go the way of all the other great american tv shows, like Nowhere Man, Odyssey 5, Millennium, American Gothic.

I assume by that you mean it doesn't get cancelled and gets to tell its story? Good enough selection there too. I'm acquiring "Millennium" and realizing (again) just how great a show it was and how criminal it was to cancel it. Very high production values and interesting arcs.

"Odyssey 5" is a different kettle of fishies. I thought the plots were actually pretty poor generally but made up for by some of the best characterisation that I've ever seen in sci-fi. You could watch the show for Paul Weller's wise-cracks alone.

"Nowhere Man" was quite interesting because we were never really sure what Hidden Agenda was all about, least until "Gemini" came along and completely flipped the tables at the end. I've just last week acquired the entire series, so I'll be giving it a rewatch.

"American Gothic" also had some real potential - really liked this show. Good strong characters - Buck with a B - and a great cliff hanger ending that never got resolved. Currently being posted slowly to me by my cousins since they've not released this show on DVD either...

I voted other, for Doctor Who

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Ive been watching Odyssey 5 on TV3 now for the last while. Not sure that Ive made up my mid yet.I loved the first episode
when the earth got destroyed and they died and wud hav thought it sheer genius if they had just left it there.

I think ill stick with it altho i take it didnt last too long?

Uh huh. The OP forgot to put it in and the biased mod refused to add SG1. He can hardly be arguing about it on quality grounds given he thinks Voyager is good :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

Odyssey 5 was a fantastic series while it was on-very adult, to say the least. Its a pity it was cancelled. It also made me into a Manny Coto fan, and I hate the fact that all the series he works on seem to get binned. :(

I also met Tamara Craig Thomas a while back. She's one hot lady.

    silly OP ;p

I'm a farscape man my-self. I liked it from when it first aired on BBC to when the Peace Keeper wars finished.

Always watched it, never missed an ep. I also both the DVD's as it came out... I'm a bit of a fan when it comes to it :)

I love Firefly and wish it had not been cancelled as it had a good rich story and universe. I cant wait till Serenity comes out. I hope they get to continue the season.

BSG I really like. But as its been said. It is young and has only had 13eps. I guess if they are keeping to the 13eps per season, then we will see how it is by the 3 season... if it gets or has one.

SG1, Is great and still going, cant wait for season 9
SG:A Is good. But I want to see how season two go'es. I loved the city battle bits in the season ending.

I remember nowhere man from when it was on Sky. I've not heard or seen it in ages. Would love to get it and watch it again

It's a full 22-episode season for Season Two. There's the danger of having a lot of filler material - would have prefered a shorter, higher quality season myself. Maybe it'll stretch over the full year but it's less likely.

Aye, be interesting to see how SG:A season 2. SG-1 is going so long now that you can rely in it :) The big changes this season though could either rejuvenate it entirely or be like cyanide. It'll be a bloody interesting July 15th when all three return on the same night.

I've managed to acquire the entire series off of my cousins recently. Must actually watch it :p

Taken was awful...a rip off of dark skies which in turn was a rip off of the x files...doctor who is awful...special effects really to blame.

No where man only lasted one season,in general most US series that are axed after one season are done so before the are shown here so you can at least save yourself being ripped off by not watching it. John Doe was great but unfortunately it didn’t have the BBC backing it!

At least the scfi channel has saved some great scfi shows..ie star gate

Millennium was great to,I preferred it to the xfiles as when it was starting to get good was when the xfiles started to go down hill(blame chris carter) and Millennium went downhill in its 3rd season (when chris carter had more creative influence over it)

Why on earth can a man create such brilliance and then go and ruin it by replacing great story lines with unbelievable ones and killing of great characters ie Cancer man and krychek.

Best scfi on TV is Smallvile although not really classified in that category!

Space above and beyond was just as good as Battlestar galactica(more of a rip off of that than the original if u ask me)

Ok, I was prepared to riposte most of your points until I saw this little gem

    /me sighs loudly.

As for accusing several great programs of copying, well thats crazy. Dark Skies may have been a cash-in on the X-Files gravy train, but it was certainly no copy.

And how you can say Space:Above and Beyond is a copy of anything, is surely the first signs of madness?

I think he means the new BSG is a ripoff of Space above and beyond.

Doctor Who really should be an option :/ Some people prefer Sci Fi to be a bit more human, rather than just military blowin' up and ambassador dealings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭trishw78

I've never seen Firefly but I love all the rest and sorry but farscape wins everytime hands down

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 432 ✭✭Daelus

I've changed my mind, 'Firefly' is actually my favourite. I've been watching the series through again on DVD and it's bloody brilliant. :D

And it's very human, not just all military blowing stuff up! :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 520 ✭✭✭foxybrowne

    Yeah, where's Doctor Who?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 328 ✭✭Vulture

B5 was great up to a point but it dragged on a bit, should have ended a little sooner. True i would have wanted more episodes but i can live with that. Dont ever watch the films 3 out of 5 sucked really really badly.
Farscape was much more human and the way the main character got a little crazyier every season was excellent. He got tortured on three diffrent occasions and had a crazy bad guy stuck in his mind, thats not good for mental health. They had a nice continous storyline and most of the filler episodes were very entertaining, farscape hands down.
Firefly might have equaled or even surpassed it but was axed to young.
Battlestar? to bloody dull, the most entertaining character is that blond psylon and not because of her dialogue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

    :D

Have watched Firefly and Serenity in the intervening three years and have to say I really enjoyed both. Such a pity the show got cancelled. Space-westerns ftw!
