I am going to toronto this summer for a year and was wondering if anyone could give me some info about opening bank accounts over there when i arrive. Is it hard to do because im not a canadian citizen or will it be easy. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I don't know a great deal about opening an account, but I have heard it can be difficult, you have to have a Social Insurance number (SIN), a job and accommodation. Good luck and enjoy canada! ;)

No it shouldnt be a problem Ive set one up over there. You'll ned 2 pieces of identification and proof of an address over there like the envelope ur SIN comes in... I cant remember whether i needed my actual SIN no. for them. Your best best is to check it out with them when you arrive...

    are you going with usit?

If so, they organise a hour long induction at the usit office (or swap office as its called here, its on spadina and king, toronto, I think). They'll give you all the info you need on setting up a bank account. They even recommend a bank thats just around the corner from, TD Canada trust is the name of the bank. Thye have staff who deal with the usit people. The usit office also let you use their address as a postal address and will keep your mail for you. You can open you account without your sin number (social sec. number) - usit will also get that organised for you.

You'll get your atm cards and pin numbers on the day you open your ac - so none of this waiting around crap.

    hope this helps
