abit/64 not booting

I just bought an abit av8 and AMD 64 3000 chip. I installed the mobo properly, et al. However, my machine hangs and reboots when it starts to load into windows. Just after the bios startup has finsihed, and it begins to load up XP, it hangs and reboots. The chip is not overclocked, there is nothing else plugged into the board that could cause this problem.
    Any thoughts?

Ok I think we need more info:

    What psu do you have?
What temp is your cpu in the bios?
    What are your other specs?
    1 or 2 memory modules?

Could be simply a heat related issue but a few more details are needed.

i have only 1 stick of ram (its in the correct slot) 512 megs
    PSU is a Hiper 350w
Cpu temp is around 23 celsius
i have 6/7 hdd's but only 1 is connected. i disconned everything unnessecary to eliminate that possibility.
It's definetly not a heat issue.

are you sure that you have seated the heatsink correctly and that it has made full contact with the processor? Did you also try to reset the bois to its default settings? Maybe aslo reset the memory in its slot!

Can you add different ram or check out the 512 stick in another machine?

I just tried it. the ram works grand in my 3rd machine. In fact, everything worked this morning, with my old mobo and chip. I'm normally well able to handle this sort of thing, but I am just mystified at whats wrong with this setup :(

Galwaydude: yep, I checked, the heatsink is perfect, and it has thermal paste and all.
*Gdude: Nice to see that you dont hold a grudge after our altercation ;)

Did you do a fresh install of windows with this board? Did you try to boot with the lowest clock settings in the bios? Did you try your ram in different slots?

as Sgtshaft said but maybe you just have a faulty motherboard.... If you didn't do a fresh install I would recommend wiping the slate clean and doing a fresh install!

You should never use an exsisting install when changing something as big as motherboard/cpu. Its bound to cause trouble.

Beat me to it; I thought he automatically did a fresh install. It’s defiantly the problem with the board.

Your right! I gave it a reinstall and its working grand now. Long way from my 1st machine, a p133, where I could swap mobos and boot straight into windows!
    Thanks, guys.

When you get a new motherboard you should always, always, always reinstall windows straigh away.
