    Hi,
Attached is an image of a little problem I have. I got a new motherboard after being told I needed " a mainboard for a Pentium 3 Processor, it is for PC133 SDRAM memory. " So I got the new one anyway, and hooked it all up except for one wire, the one that goes from the power button to the motherboard. I can't find a similar slot for it anywhere. What should I do? The slot it was in on the old one says "sleep|power on" beside it.

Also, how much do you reckon the card in the yellow box is worth? It's a pinnacle systems card gmbh. It has 3 connections that look like USB, but their not.

    Thanks:)

Newer mobo's don't all have connections like that. You may need to splice the connection. Have a look for a power on jumper on the new mobo.

The picture is too low quality to really make out what we're looking for tbh.

What do you mean splice the connection? What would that involve?

I got a few clear images from google. I had a look and didn't find a "power on jumper" connection?!?! I don't really know what I'm looking for

    hopefully these will help

See on the bottom left on page 14 for the connection of the power button in your mobo's manual

Arghhhhhh.. thanks sooo much, but unfortunately, the wire is about an inch too short. Typical. The one wire I need to be long is too short and the rest are slacking all over the place. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

    thanks again:)

Doesn't make sense to me. What kind of case do you have? I presume the motherboard is installed in the case? The FP1 connector is very near the front of the case, where I presume the powerbutton is?

Unless you have a full tower case with the powerbutton near the top of the case?

The FP1 connector on your motherboard is in the most common place for it to go. Case manufacturers obviously make the wires long enough to go the distance. Unless it was altered?

If you need the wire to be longer, the easiest (if you can't replace the wire yourself or reconnect the connector) is to cut it in the middle, use two screw blocks at the ends you just cut off and use a spare length of wire in the middle. Not pretty though...

    Hi,
thanks for the feedback. I have attached images of my case. Again they aren't very good but hopefully give you an idea. The case is massive, I don't know why it's so big. The top red dot on image 15 is where the power buttons are, the bottom is where the connection is on the new MB (remember, it's a new MB, different to the one that came with it). The green dot is where the connection used to be on the old MB.

Image 16 shows a red circle around the connection where it's supposed to go, and that's the wire in my hand stretched as far as it will go. So close:(

Image 18 shows where the buttons are on my outer case.

What exactly do I need to extend the wires? What are these "screw blocks" you refer too? Is it complicated? I don't care about the way it looks, as long as it all works:) I hope it works after all this!!!

Hard to tell in Image 16 but are you sure you have a standard ATX power switch connector? If it is a proprietary case from Dell or Gateway it would explain the short wires and a non-standard connector.

In a standard ATX case you should have a bundle of wires from the front panel like these:
    hard-080.jpg

The power switch connector goes on the appropriate header pins indicated in your motherboard manual and/or on the PCB:

    Hi,
Thanks for the help Snowbat, the pc was from Gateway alright:( and my power switch connecter doesn't have seperate wires like above, it's just one block. You can slightly make it out in the first image in the first post. Any idea how I would go about extending it so? What are these "Screw Blocks" :o

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Any more ideas on what I should do (and how to do it) to solve this so?
    Thanks

Get a new ATX case, i have one in garage if you want it :)

Manky beige one but works, or get a new shiny case with lights and stuff on it.

My oh my, so much time and effort and money has gone into trying to fix this pc. It's not even worth it at this stage I don't think:(

Is a new case the only option? I just need that wire to stretch about another 2 inches!!

How much would you be looking for the case? Where do you live?

    TB-7.jpg

Or terminal connectors or what not. You insert the loose wires on both ends and secure the screw on top. Not pretty but it will work :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

ok thanks again Unkel, I've never used them before. Just curious, that doesn't really look like it would make it stretch enough, are there wider ones I can get? Or can I put a few together or anything like that?
    Thanks

Here's what to do. You see the connector in the picture? It has 12 rows. Take a knife / scissors and cut off the last 2 rows. With the remaining 10 rows cut off the last 2 rows. Throw the now remaining 8 rows into a corner of your room

With the 2 little blocks of two rows you now have in your hand, do the following. Cut the short wire in the middle. Seperate the wire ends and bare the metal of the wire on both ends and connect them to the connectors. Now find a bit of spare wire and connect that to the free ends of the connectors, effectively increasing the length of your original cable :)

Aha, never thought of that

I'll give it a shot so!! thanks allot! You can buy them and wire almost anywhere I take it?

I bet now, after allll this I've probably ruined something else when taking it all apart and stuff. If the pc doesn't work I'll go crazy!!! CrAzY!!!!

Thanks to all for the help. I'll let you know if I blow it up or get it going or what not:)

    Thanks allot for that K.

Tell you what, I'll give this screwblock thing a shot and if that fails, I'll give you a pm:)
    thanks!

    Arghhhhh..
Just spent aggggeeeessss doing the screw block thing, plugged in the power, the fan spun for a few seconds (without me pressing anything) and then I tried the buttons and they didn't work  :(

Kdjac, would it be ok to get that case off you if you don't mind? Could you PM me your details please?

So when doing the screw block thing, I'm not sure if I did it right, do you screw the screws onto the exposed wire or do you put the wire through to the other side and twist it around the other wire and put them both back through the screw block half way and screw the screws onto the insulating tube surround the wire? What is the point of the screw block? Would electrical tape work the same? Pretty annoyed at this stage:(

    phear my paint skilllzzzz

edit:/ and yes you screw the screws down onto each exposed wire
edit#2:/ and thats badly drawn, there should be 4 screws shown on each block there
edit#3:/ i misread unkels post, that drawing is for 2wires, not one as is your case
    edit#4:/so bored

    Hi, thanks for the help:)

Ok, attached is a photo of the way I have it. All seems to be in order. I wonder why it's not working

It wouldn't make a difference that I didn't cut off the unused screw blocks no?

I had 9 wires to used 2 rows of 6 on each side of the extra wire. Could it just be one loose connection in it that's stopping it from turning on?

This is so annoying. The PC isn't worth all this effort but I've put so much effort in already that I can't give up:( haha.

From the pic i see 5 white wires in centre and more than 5 coming out other end.

looks like the right idea to me, not very pretty but however, just check that you havent mixed up any of the wires

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

There are 4 red wires below it :o

I'm pretty sure it's all correct. Maybe there are a few bad screw ins though.

K, do you still have that case you don't want? Any chance I could nick it off you?:)

Mixed up? well it wouldn't really make a difference would it? like.. they are all the same right? Like it wouldn't make a difference if a green connected to the block and was orange on the other side would it? They are still all connected the same way, right? Actually.... I'm confused now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

em no not really, it would make a difference

    :(

Ok, cormie is going crazy here!! I think it's at a stage now that if I go any further I'll probably just go insane.
