Hey I just got a new 180gb Hitachi Deskstar. Great drive, nice performance but it's a lot noisier than my samsungs. I've seen software for reducing noise levels on certain hard-drives at the cost of performance. I was just wondering if anyone had seen such software for the Hitachi drives as it doesn't need to be fast. It's just for movies and music really.

Hitachi feature tool - you should be able to download this from the hitachi website. Its basically a programme you put on a bootable disk (its about 1.5mb in size) and run when you start the PC. You can change the DMA level, acoustic management (what you want) and monitor a load of smart data also.

    Hitachi tools download page

You probably want to set it to 'Quiet Seek Mode'

    Tag.

I've the same hard drive (80gb model) and its similarly noisy as hell.

I had hdparm in Linux to quiten it, but it drove me to distration in Windows.

I have an 80gig one and agree there a good performer, mine was very loud when i got it first (kind of a high pitch of the arms when reading/writing) but now it has got really quite so may be the same will happen to yours.
