Since this question keeps poping up again and again and again.....

Why not make a stickie and update it every one and a while?

IMHO Best bang for the buck in AGP for gaming.
(PCI express is a different kettle of fish)

    Ultra budget AGP
    (sub €100)

Radeon 9550: (€71) performs close to a 9600/9600 pro and cheaper
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=300465&cks=PRL

    2nd hand: geforce 4 4200 64mb/128mb (don't pay over €50)
Performance is around the 9600 pro mark. DX8.1 card
    Ditto a 9600Pro/9600XT

2nd hand: any of the radeon 9800 series XT,pro, non pro.
    (don't pay over €100) Peformance close to a 6600gt(€190+). DX9 card
Better choice than any of the Geforce FX 5900 series 2nd hand.

AVOID geforce fx series(5XXX), geforce MX series, Radeon 9200 or 8500.

    Budget AGP
    (€100-€150)

nvidia 6600: (€130) performs much better than anything else in that range
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307923&cks=PRL

    mainstream AGP
    (€150-€200)

nvidia 6600gt: (€190+) Best performer for the money.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307919&cks=PRL

AVOID: The 6800 unless you can get it for under €250.
It's better than a 6600GT but current prices have it hovering close to €300 which is not far off a X800XL.

    High End AGP
    (€300-€350)

radeon X800XL: (€325+) Performance is on par with a 6800GT.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308872&cks=PRL

    (€350-€400)
Nvidia 6800GT: (€385+) Performance similar to X800XL but has shader 3.0 support and a few other features the X800XL does not support.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307928&cks=PRL

    Ultra High End AGP (€400+)

X850XT for around a €480 is good value(if you can call it that!).
Similar/better performance depending on game to a 6800 ultra which costs €540.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308452&cks=PRL

If you hve a shuttle box that onlt takes single slot cards then an X800XT/PE is the best choice.(€440+)

No point getting an nvidia 6800 ultra AGP IMHO.

Extra cost not worth it. Unless you really want shader 3.0 support and all the other stuff radeon don't support........

If you are after SLI it's time to go PCI express.....

AVOID: X800 Pro. The X800XL costs less and gives the same performance and at above €400 the price is too close to X800Xt's which perform much better.

*All prices from komplett.ie, correct as of 12th may 2005.

*komplett.ie used as a rough price guide: shop around for better prices.

    mainstream AGP

    Gainward GeForce 6800LE (230e)(170e on Jes.de!!)

How is the 6800 LE not in the mainstream AGP !!!!

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=303912&cks=PRL

It is then usually possible to softmod this card to GT speeds!!!

    Nice post uberpixie. Very nice.

I've been promising to clean up the stickies for about 2 months now, so it's time I got my finger out and actually did it. I'm trying to keep the number of them low, so I'll see if there's a way to incorporate this into the cleaned up versions.

Best Bang for your buck in PCI EXPRESS.

    Again IMHO.

    All prices are form komplett.ie.

    Ultra Budget
    (sub €100)

    Either a Nvidia 6200 or a X300Se for around €60

Both are s h i t e for playing anything. Do yourself a favour and buy in the next price range.

AVOID all X300's and all 6200's in ANY price range. They lead to pain.

    Budget
    (€100-150)

    nvidia 6600 (€130+)
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307936&cks=PRL

AVOID radeon X300,X600,X600Pro and Nvidia 6200's

    Mainstream
    (€150-€250)

    nvidia 6600GT(€185+)
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307935&cks=PRL

You can go SLI with some models of the 6600GT. But overall just Buy a 6800GT. Performs better than 6600GTx2 and you can always add another in ther future.

    6800GT x1 not much more expensive than 6600GT x2.

Bare in mind SLI does not work for a lot of games! If you go 6600GTx2 chances are you will be only using 1 card for a lot of games.

In short just get a 6800GT screw SLI.

Also worth looking at is the radeon X800 DDR1 (€215+)
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308906&cks=PRL
    Performs better than the 6600GT

    High End
    (€300-400)

    radeon X800XL(€315+)
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=306372&cks=PRL

Nvidia 6800GT if you can find one for under €400. None on komplett at the mo but i'm sure if you look else where you will find em cheap.

    Club 3d 6800GT(€405+)
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=308361&cks=PRL

6800GT's can go SLI. If you plan on going SLI. Get 6800GT's not ultras. Performance difference vs price difference is not worth it.

Also keep an eye on the radeon X850Pro(€380+). Have not seen benchs for it yet. Might be good.

    Ultra High End
    (€450+)

    Either a X850XT(€450+) or an nvidia 6800 Ultra(€540+)

Ultras can go SLI of course. But GTs in SLI perform so close to ultras in SLI that IMHO get 6800GTs if you plan on getting SLI.

Personally I think paying over €400 to get 30 extra frames in SOME games is madness.

SLI is still buggy and only works for SOME games. That €400+ could be saved for a next gen gfx card which will pwn the €800+ you spent on x2 6800 GTs.

Or you could just get more ram, better CPU, a raptor 10,000 rpm hard drive or a better monitor!

    But thats just me.

Only included cards that perform from stock.

Did not include cards that may or may not perform if overclocked/softmoded.

It's a rough guide for newbies.

Uber you ha out done yourself. There is a severe need of a sticky for Gfx rating.Maybe post it in the test forum and we can all add then get Khannie to incorporate/tidy it up and put it into the comp stickies?

Just a note. there is a BFG 6800 Ultra for 380euro in Jes (outta stock at the mo)
Might want to put in links and advice on buying too - like where and for what and pitfalls......etc........

    Class job anyways

Well some linkage is all good. Crazy price for the ultra!

A section for softmoded cards/good overclockers could be added as well to keep Shiny happy :-)

EDIT: just saw on jes X800XT vivo's in AGP for €360:eek:

    Be perfect for my shuttle......
    A steal.

As posted in the Modding forum - they have two 6800LE's under 200 - mod to a Gt and your laughing. Cant find a good tweak for them though
    Anyone?

This is another section of the sticky that could be put in.A price list of the cheapest cards from the like of Jes,Komplett.............. but updating them would be a b*tch every now and then.

    Nukem

It's a good idea alright. Def should be a section on modable/overclockable cards

Just give people a list of links. Anything ya post up price wise will go very quickly out of date.

Better just to clearly state what cards are the best value in each range and assume people will have the sense to put 2 and 2 together if they see a good card cheaper than the list price in the stickie :-)

List only ever needs to be updated every 3-6 mths/ after every new gen.

Only takes about 1/2 hr to knock up a list if you have researched the benchies and have it clear in your head.

    Not too much work.

I thought I had found the cheapest 6800GT AGP available a few days back when I saw this Leadtek on Comtech.de for just under €314, but then I spotted this Gainward for €294.12.
Although dealing mainly with German customers it states on their shipping page:
"Orders from abroad are normally possible. With foreign deliveries we dispatch only with GLS"
Could be a viable option, JES computer are also a German outfit, and Komplett supply Irish, British and Dutch customers from their Netherlands warehouse so it's not as if folks on here never order stuff from the continent :)
