This is completely off-topic, but last week some Microsoft reps came in and talked to us about being software engineers with them, I really don't know, but the whole experience left me with this over welling feeling that they are the spawns of Satan and working for them would be the wrong decision to make as far as my mortal soul goes, so it hardly surprises me that they are in league with the homo.

"...and working for them would be the wrong decision to make as far as my mortal soul goes, so it hardly surprises me that they are in league with the homo."

That, er, doesn't seem too appropriate...

It's in the best interest of a lot of multinationals to SAY that they'll be supportive of a diverse workforce, but not too many of them make huge committments though. I've worked for a few multinationals before (and currently work for a famous TLA), but for some reason, AOL always seemed a cool place to work for and be gay in.

Maybe it's just because there were a lot of queers there *shrug*.

The trouble of course with being in a minority where our minority status isn't immediately obvious is that any cases of glass-ceiling or unfair treatment aren't easily provable. It's not like you can easily say "Well I didn't know he was black, your honour" in a court of law ;)

    Wtf?

Anyway, Microsoft are supposed to be some of the best people to work for. You generally do the same work as you'd do in an equivalent software company in an equivalent part of the world (that can sometimes mean something as dull as localisation) but they treat you very well. The company retreats are supposed to be amazing, as are the on-site facilities and the working hours.

Sorry noel just taking the piss out of Microsoft. I've had the pleasure of some serious openscource company recently, and it's had an effect.

    No offense intended.

So I'm told. They won lots of awards and the like. That said I couldn't fight the feeling that its fundamentally wrong the way they control the market and their whole policy towards control control control. I think was drove it home was when they gave away afew copies of office and windows, and I saw what this software actually costs, I knew, but i never actually held a CD in my hand and said this is worth 500 euro and nearly every pc has a copy.

I used to think they were evil incarnate, but really they're just doing what any other company does.

Google are doing the exact same thing, trying to control the "market".

I went through the rounds for Microsoft this year (Lost out at final stage boohoo). If you are one of these Microsoft are evil type people you will have issues with them no doubt about it. However if thats the case why the hell would you even consider working for them?

At the end of the day its the most successful company around. They are constantly in the top 100 if not top 10 employers in many countries. You generally work with new software packages / applications... i.e no legacy systems.

They provide you with serious training... you get microsoft certified if you work with them. They also allow you to change direction with your career as there business is divided into 6 different areas. Also if you work in MS UK and work after 6pm you get free dominoe's... that was the main selling point for me :)

They are more then willling to invest in their staff. I personally think someone would be crazy to turn a job down there unless they had other offers :)
