I was visiting my brother in the UK recently and called up text on his sky FTV box. Text on BBC is incredible!

Anyway, he asks do I not get it with my satellite setup and I said no, I just get standard Ceefax and so on.

Is there a reason for this? Is the digital text only available thru Sky? Is it because the comag cannot handle Digital text?

    Any thoughts?

    MJ

You mean Sky "Open TV" Interactive text. Ironically given name it is proprietary and only works on Sky Digibox.

Teletext etc, is actually also entirely digital and has been so since launch (in late 60s early 70s ?). It is a digital signal sent in blank TV lines on Analog, or in a separate Data Stream on Digital Broadcasting. Embedded Photos and different fonts were demonstrated over 30 years ago on teletext. I was there!

"Interactive Text" as used by Sky / BBC is actually very slow compared with a Sat receiver or PC caching an entire teletext magasine.

IMO the new "Open TV" based interactive text is poorly thought out and using too little bandwidth making it slow. Also the Sky box does not cache it. Unfortunately most folks can't comp[are as the BBC does not transmit teletext on Satellite, except on BBC Prime and BBC World.

I can read all the *SAME TEXT* of news items on BBC World Teletext about 3 times faster than on the Sky Digibox using "Interactive Text"

are you mad ? ceefax pisses all over digital text, to put it bluntly

Not mad, I just thought it looked a whole lot better than Ceefax. I can't comment on speed issues as I did not use it long enough.

Anyway, it does nto matter that ceefax was quicker, Ceefax is almost dead I was just looking for something that I can check sport headlines, tv listings and news without having to get up off my backside and go to the computer :D
