PS:- just to put it in perspective - if Cyprus win tonight and Ireland AT LEAST draw in their final home match, Ireland top the group, with Portugal in 2nd place. Portugal would then go to the playoffs against an Asian team and Ireland would go straight through to the final 16 for the World Cup.

    nice, eh?

Doubt it. Are Portugal playing with 6 men?

Is there only 16 not 24?

No, but in the first half, Cyprus have been playing much better than Portugal and are justified in their 1-0 lead.

Well Portugal just scored but there's hope yet - even a draw is good for us.

You can imagine where it goes from here. --- He fixes the cable?

So we now need a better result than Portugal (i.e. we have to win if they draw or we can draw if they lose - not likely).

Alternatively we have to beat Cyprus by 8 goals more than Portugal beat Estonia.

Group winners qualify for the finals, the runners-up will meet the third-placed team from Asia in a two-leg play-off. First leg - November 10th/11th, second leg - November 14th, 2001.

Asia. Split into two groups of five, two group winners qualify for finals. The two runners-up will play each other in a two-leg play-off and the winner will then play the European Group 2 runner-up in a two-leg play-off for a place in the finals.

These groups still have 14 games each (each team 5-6 games), so they are still wide open.

Group A Bahrain, Iran, Saudi Arabia,
Iraq, Thailand - no clear leader.

Group B China, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Oman - China clear favourite, then Qatar.

    Ah well!!!

    --

Estonia may do us a favour yet, - by holding Portugal to a draw - (who knows what'll happen if they just stick 11 men behind the ball and play ultra-defensively) ... or hell- by winning(??!)...

    unlikely though...

We shouldn't need any such favours though, - seriously. I like to believe that Ireland will comfortably get through and qualify for the World Cup, be that through play-off's or not, - on their own merits and achievements.

They've done well lads... bring on Cyprus in Landsdowne!
