Just watching the Greendale live dvd from Vicar St. Neil Young is such a legend. I bought the Greendale book today, haven't even so much as flicked through it yet. Thinking of picking up the movie too. Anyone seen it?

yeah i was at that vicar street gig, pity they don't show the mind-blowing performance of 'ambulance blues' & others on the dvd
i don't know about the greendale book, i read that it's essentially just the lyrics prettily bound ... i assume you've read 'shakey'
    utter legend

I was also at the gig, I was pretty disappointed all the second half of the show was on the dvd.

    What's Shakey?

    the (auto)biography
it's neil in conversation discussing his life chronologically. In typical neil fashion, he kicked up a bit of a fuss before the book was released, stopping the interviews before they were all done, leaving the book somewhat incomplete. It's an utterly compelling and illuminating read.

I'll have to add that to my list.

Yeah the film greendale is pretty good, real low budget, but it works to a tee! recommand that Shakey book too!

Shakey is a good book. Although the other biography - Zero To Sixty is also very good - perhaps more critical of the way Neil tends to fúck people over all the time :D (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0952954044/qid=1115897020/sr=8-6/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i5_xgl14/002-2600242-0018440?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

As for the Greendale gig - thought it was great. Great album too - definetly a high after the fairly poor "Are You Passionate". That was a bastard of an album. Although there were a few good tracks - especially the Crazy Horse ones from Eurotour 2001.

Anyway back to (auto)biographies - David Crosby's one, "Long Time Gone" is really worth a read. Its a bit like watching a train wreck.

....Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young's Deja vu is definitely one of te best albums ever. Every song on the album is a classic. Great for a sunny day!

He's recording his next album at the moment. He's just our of hospital after suffering a brain aneurism.

Anyone know if the second half of the Vicar St. gig is available anywhere? on bittorrent or anything?

I didn't hear a word about him being ill. How does that not make the news? Paris Hilton only has to walk along the beach in Cannes and it's on the news. ****'s sake.

I haven't seen the Dublin show online I'm afraid.

I just saw it mentioned on Pitchfork the other day. Don't think it was too serious.

Where in Dublin could one get the greendale book ??

I was also lucky enough to be front row at the recorded Vicar st. Gig. Amazing almost religious experience. Wish people would'nt have kept taking photos though, it was clearly annoying him.

Great to hear other people who love Greendale too. Why does he not get more media coverage anymore??

I was there too, right up beside the camera man.

D'ya remember the guy who kept maing the "Carry On" joke. God he was annoying.

As ya said, surreal atmosphere, best gig I've been to by a mile.

I got mine in Tower Records on Wicklow St. I read it the other day, it's basically the lyrics and a few notes on each of the songs. All the lyrics are spread out and there are accompanying drawings for the songs. Very well done. Has an appendix on the history of the Green family and a selection of the paintings done by Sun Green's dad. It's very nicely put together but really for hardcore fans only.

The crowd was strange that night at Vicar St. Lots of serious fans there, not taking a breath but then a load of people who were just there for the sake of it being Neil Young. Most annoying thing of the night for me was a woman who kept walking slowly up and down the back of the venue in her high heels making loud clicking noises with each step. I wanted to go downstairs and snap off the heels on her shoes!

Nice! I wonder what sort of style he's gone for on it. Nashville leads to me to believe another Harvest Moon type album. That would be nice.

excellent, I hope it's released sooner rather than later, we had to wait an age for greendale.

Yeah that year between Are You Passionate? and Greendale seemed like an eternity :p
