Its a chat and file transfer program... mainly chat though.
It uses the names in your msn / hotmail address book as your contacts and you can talk to them whenever, im sure theres a help section in the program.

Send friends (who also have MSn Messenger) your email address, needs to be a hotmail one. and add them to your contact list in mesenger. when either they or you go online you will be able to see that in the tab and can choose to chat to them if you like. Hope this helps.

If you don't have, or don't want to have, a hotmail account, then you'll need to sign up for a .Net passport using another email addy.
You can add friends/contacts manually or by clicking on icons in forums and such (where they're listed). Anyone you add to your contact list needs to allow you to do so from their end (this avoids unwanted contact).
Messenger can be used for chat, webcam, voice chat or file transfer.

Also, you can try the online Help in the messenger window for FAQs...

If you don't like the official MSN client there are alternatives available such as

    Gaim (My favourite).
Amsn - less bloated, but has similar interface to official MSN so if the official client's not your cup of tea...
