Lead Guitarist wants to start Knopfler tribute band, that's David not Mark... only joking. Can play sultans of swing note for note (honest I can :D I'm really good). Need drummer, bass and 2nd guitar. If it ever happens and we can do original stuff then so be it.

This thread 'll die a death!

jesus you'd struggle to get that one goin cos for some reason knopfler isn't rated as highly as he should be... i think he's a genius... i'd love to join ya but i wouldn't be at that standard just yet..best of luck tho

Thanks, don't let your current skill or lack of it stop you, I'd rather have an enthusiastic beginner than no one at all :) . It's just an excuse to play.

I suppose you're going to see him then? he is brilliant, I find all his stuff, including Dire Straits to a degree, it grows on you instead of being an instant hit. I hope he plays some Dire Straits stuff like Sultains, Romeo & Juliet and Money For Nothing, classic

What age and where are you based? I'm a guitarist, 26, in Northside Dublin.

"you sound like a 13 yr old"

lol .... juno75, thanks! yeah you're as young as you sound. I don't have a tricone, but do play slide now and then. I finger pick a lot and play in open G which is the main tuning Mark uses and have two red strats maple and rosewood necks.

    jomanji,
Put is this way I've been a fan since I was 14 when they started. I live in Kildare.

    5. Romeo & Juliet

yeah, thats gonna rock, I can't wait!
19th = Revenge Of The Sith
    20th = Mark Knopfler

I don't see Our Shangri La there :( thats a great song, as is Don't Crash The Ambulance, all three of his albums are great, and its good that he throws in Dire Straits stuff too *ponders* will Sting make a guest appearance for Money For Nothing lol

"would there be a market for a ds tribute do ya think"

Good question. I figure there's a huge amount of people that would really enjoy it if they heard a good one, but I guess it's mostly young adults that attend concerts and they may not be drawn to it even if they would love it if they gave it a chance - there's great songs to hear afterall.

Having said that there maybe corporate functions and wedding's etc where you have a fan that wants a tribute band like that. I'm hoping that if it's sounds good you'll get interest. They seem to do very well on the continent.

Our Shangri was played at the start of the tour so it could come back into the set list who knows. Sting maybe not but Paul Brady might if he's around and maybe Donnal Lunny, Liam OFlynn?

    So any takers?

...my sources tell me that it was played last night.

" Another great show tonight in Prague which culminated in an impromptu rendition of Shangri-La which wasn't on the set-list for the evening. Someone shouted out the request along with something about a birthday, I couldn't hear exactly, so Mark decided we should play it for him. "

    Just pulling yer plank :)

Well, if you can have a half decent stab at half of that list then thats pretty impressive.
MK's physical playing style is quite individual innit? A lot of finger picklin he uses would be his own kind? , a bit quirky to learn?

I reckon there's a market for sure, Biggest band in the world for a time in the 80's etc

I just figured yer name and why, penny drops...
What about kit? the ubiqtious strat, what kinda amp(s) to cover the range of stuff, this will be crucil I reckon.
Im a fan but never learnt his stuff, more of a muddy waters type (open G,slide, ballsack full of blues)

I cant spell and I like questions

Well they say it's all in the fingers and I don't have his, can but try. I have 61 US reissue fender strat with Lindy Fralin vintage hots that covers most things, if you need the sound just give it some vibrato. I have a great 1984 sessionette 75 amp that gives me a good clean but warm sound and a slightly overdriven sound for other stuff like Brothers in Arms, though I don't have a Les Paul yet - minor problems :)

My philosophy is hit the right notes first the rest will follow.

    I Concurr.

    Nice Strat btw
Oddball old amp, I like it.

When you get it together, post it up here. I'll stagger along, deffo :)
    Good Luck!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 redfender_man

Thanks Dub_guitarist, yes it's me, there's loads of better sounding clips out there by tributes so I would have used one of those if I were that sneaky.

Why is it so hard to get people together to play any music?

I'm in Balbriggan, probably a bit far.Very good playing though, I can't get a lot of those licks because I use a plec, I think fingers n thumb is the only way to go there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 redfender_man

Thanks kimnjess, yep it's all fingers and thumb, but sometimes once you get the technique you can copy it with a plectrum afterwards .. sometimes ;)

Balbriggan is a good way, ideally if you can get into Dublin that would be the decider as that's where probably the rehearsals or potentially  the gigs would be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭kimnjess

Keep me posted, I work in Dublin city anyway.
