    Hi,

there may already be a thread dealing with this but i haven't yet found it. Can anyone tell me when O2 will roll out its 3g service and what are the likely phones/tarrifs going to be? Trying to decide whether to wait or just switch back to Vodafone.

    Thanks

I was chatting with an O2 sales rep (a rather cute one too ;)) who said that it should be later in the year, maybe around late Autumn. They're studying the mistakes that Vodafone are making and, in her words, "we want to be sure its perfect before launching it into the market." She said that there are a few people in Dublin doing test runs on the 3G network, but that's not really news at this stage.

The new SIM packs come with coverage maps that show the 3G coverage too.

They're right too. Look at the shambles of a 3G network that Vodafone put together. Even Meteor beats it.

I'm currently involved in the 3G project for O2.
It's well known Vodafone have had many issues with their system and it hasnt been a good start for them.
We are currently beginning customer trials and will be basing the time of rollout on the outcome - it aimed for late Autumn though.
It'll be worth hanging in there with O2... there's lots of very interesting things in the pipeline for 3G and content.

Would the content thats in the pipeline be the same content that is available in the UK now?

Vodafone deserve credit for rolling out first, someone has to pioneer it and see what problems arise and try to rectify it. If everyone had the lets wait and see what mistakes the others make attitude, we'd never get 3g. I'm using Vodfone 3g since february and havnt had 1 problem.

    really - from recent times...

    o2
mms - O2 beat Voda to make it available to consumers
grps isp - O2 beat Voda to make gprs internet access available to consumers
    wap 2.0 - O2 beat Voda

    voda
gprs wap - Voda beat O2 (but took months to offer isp service to consumers)
hscsd - only Voda rolled it out
    3g - Voda launched*

    * with billing, handset, network, content and customer care issues all following (for me at least)...
