So we call the 1960s the 60s and there's the 70s, 80s, 90s (and so on) but what the hell are we gonna call the time from 2000-2010 (and thereafter) when we look back on these years.

Dumb as it sounds, people say "the noughties".

Moi, I refuse to break time into such crude categories.

Oh people find ways to categorize most anything. It'll probably just be called the early 21stcentury

I've known what they've been called since 2001 or so - yet I can't find a single reason to use it. What cultural revolution type thing has happened in the last 5 years? Nothing. This has been a dreadfully characterless decade to be honest.

I think th naughties is more apt

Well they might call it "The turn of the century"

but you could go back to the last century to answer that question too. What term was used to describe the years between 1900 and 1910. I guess it would have been the "nineteen hundreds" but the "twenty hundreds" doesnt sound right. So I'm going to go with "the turn of the century."

Now what significant things have happened in this century. well the tsunami for one. It was an even bigger disaster than the california earthquakes of the start of the 20th century.

We have 9/11 which could be compared to the titanic, in that the death toll was in the thousands, although the former was a deliberate event while the latter was accidental. both are equally notworthy events.

I don't say Two-Thousand-and-Noughty-Five (2005), so I'd rather be force fed gravel than use the word "noughties".

The twenty hundreds is how i will refer to them:
"George W. Bush he was a terrible w**ker of the twenty hundreds"

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 729 ✭✭✭popinfresh

It's not two thousand and five, it's twenty o' five ;)

Plus, if we call 2030 two thousand and thirty, then the next generation will be confused as to why the last century was different. I.e As far as they'll be concerned

'we're gonna party like it's....one thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine'

I'm all for calling 2010 twenty ten, (It'll catch on :))

Feckin Americans with their backwards calander. Worse than Australia with their backwards seasons.

If this decade is called the naughties, does that mean the next wil be the Oneies/Onies/Wonies/1ies?
