If you want a kind of greatest hits type thing you could try their classical album, Symphony and Metallica. The Black Album has Enter Sandman and that sort of stuff on it but I'd recommend Kill 'em All.

master of puppets does it for me i must say but yeah as a kind of best of i would have to agree with the above post

Ride the Lightning does it for me!!!top-class album...one of my favs!!!..
    ..Fight fire......Ride the lightning....Bell tollz....Fade to black...creeping death....all the songs are sweet!!!

yeah, its hard to decided its a big 4-way between the first four albums, but if you want the more mainstream, go The Black Album onwards

personally, atm its Ride The Lightning

Black album is definitely the way to get introduced to Metallica. For me, ...And justice for all is my favourite. Its funny how every Metallica fan has a different favourite album. Very few bands could claim such a boast.

it is tough but if it was like i was held at gunpoint tortured and tickled then i wud have to say master of puppets but i do like rtl nd s&m oh im so fickle......

Metallica's Metallica album also known as The Black Album. Was a very sucessful album and brought them more into the mainstream. Loads of good songs on it, Enter Sandman being one of my favorites songs ever!!! You won't be disappointed!! Also a good album if you're not into the heavier metal stuff they're done! :D

"METAL UP YOUR F***IN AAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!" as the man woud say.

hmm, probably justice for me. How about a process of elimiation.....

S&M (great concept, but no matter how many times I listen, it just sounds like an ochestra playng in compete igonance of each other.
    St. Anger, weak, weak album.
    Reload iiffy at best.

I recon their best was up until justice.

    Master of Puppets for me

definately master of puppets! ride the lightning is a close second. you cant go wrong really. o but stay away from reload i think!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

Wasn't "Metal Up Your Ass" supposed to be the original proposed title for the album that ended up being named "Ride The Lightning"?

My favourite album of theirs would be St. Anger, closely followed by Load.*

*: Clearly I jest! The correct answer would be the self titled album followed by Ride the Lightning

    . . . and Justice for all

I love that album. There is, or was anyway a site with MP3s of that album but with the bass brought up in the mix. I think it was called . . . and Justice for Jason or something similar.

Id go for Mater of Puppets as an introduction, tbh. Its just great. Then id pick Ride the Lightning. They're my two fav's!!!

By far St Anger is their worst album , But I wouldnt exactly call it piss , Its just a different style to their other stuff.

Just get kill em all to ease yerself into it :)

im rather partial to kill 'em all

I disagree with the statement that St. Anger is "Crap", "Piss" and so on.

I think it's an enormously powerful album. Some hell-raising songs in there. Stadium choruses don't come much better than in St. Anger and Frantic. And nobody can deny that the album as a whole contains some of Lars's best drummery to date.

Sure, it's very different to Metallica's previous work, but it DOES signify a new direction for a band that, let's face it, badly needed a new direction. But it's hardly fair to say that because an album is different, it's crap.

    Anyone agree with me?

yep I agree just because it was different doesnt mean it was piss , personally it wasnt to my taste and not what I was expecting but I still love Metallica .I found it to be for me their worst album but I mean their worst which still makes it cool , not many bands can reach metallica`s standard , It was different at least they tried something different.Metallica rule!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,033 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

Yeah, St Anger is a decent album, just not up to the same kinda scratch of the previous attempts. Also, Load is a good album and doesnt deserve the abuse it egts imo.

    that was Kill Em All
my fav would be master of puppets

    i hated st. anger btw
but load is definitely better than people give it credit for, blleding me i think is excellent

My personal favourite has gotta be ...And Justice For All, its just mastery, and probably Kirks most inventive album for solos... And people who think Load/ReLoad/St.Anger are crap annoy me. St.Anger i'll agree lacked in places, but The Unamed Feeling, come on, thats a great song! As for Load and ReLoad, Load was the first album I ever heard, closely followed by Justice, and i didnt like Load at all. But it really grew on me and now would probabaly be one of my more listened to albums! Same with Reload, though it took a while longer!

But whats great about Metallica is their diversity. I mean who wants to listen to a band that releases 11 albums of the same stuff over and over?! Nobody!

    My advice, listen to Fixxxer!

Because we waited 5 years for ......a rock album?

Now if another band had come out with it then it would have been fine but I was expecting a Metal album from Metallica and I was disapointed with it.

no, because they said their next album was gonna be going back to the music of the past ie. Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning, the fact that they said that and made it completly different is what really puts me off it, and Frantic is only good at the start, ok fair enough it influenced some ppl ie. Gwen Stiffani(sp?) "tick tick tick tick" and "tick tock, tick tock" coinkidink? I don't think so :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 93 ✭✭Pistol Pete

"Frantic" riff = warning sound that a truck makes whilst reversing.

Best album = Master of Puppets!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

hmm, I didnt really answer the question in hand........

like many, "back in the 90's" I heard metallica 1st on the black album, then later somebody gave me a tape (jeasus, remember them!?) of Master of Puppets.

    it blew my B***KS off.

    So get puppets!

as for St anger "different" does not mean good. The drums sound like a tin can, the riffs are weak at best, maybe 4 good riffs on the whole album. The whole album just sounds like an effort by 14 year olds in a garage. Effort being the operative word.

I too was pi$$ed off when I heard it. Most of the older alblums from Metallica I would listen to regardless of who made them. As for St anger, i rather listen to stereophonics, hendrix, gallagher the list goes on.

At this stage the band has so much momentum I dont think it makes a difference what crap they put out. They could put feckin 50 cent on vocals and people would till buy it. Feckin marketing.

anyway, im starting to rant and its probably better if I do some work instead?

you say that like listning to Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher is a bad thing

Its tough but Ride The Lightning just about takes the honours for me. I have to say S&M is great aswell. It got me into Metallica after all :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭IamMetaldave

If you can get your hands on the triple CD from Mexico city you would get all the best tunes, but that was in the box set. I don't think it's possible to pick 1 Metallica album, each one has its own quailities. Its more like they have an album for different humors?? If ya know what I mean?

I'm not a massive metallica fan but i really enjoyed load. Blleding me and outlaw torn are just amazing! They should have amalgamated load and reload though

I agree, i really enjoy listening to it and Reload. It was a good change. I hate it when bands keep releasing the exact same thing over and over and over.

I personally don't actually like Black ALbum (dodges rotten fruit), but I think Reload is great. Maybe it's just me. And Justice + Master are by the far the excellentest, imo.

*throws more rotten fruit* Reload is sh1te! how can anyone like that and Load? its all poppy and stuff, a BIG leap from the first four albums, and not a leap in the right direction! The Black Album was pop too, but it was good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,033 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

With the exception of Fuel and Better than you, ReLoad was poor at best. Definitely the only Tallica album that doesnt make it into my regular rotation.

Load was alot better. It was a new direction for Metallica and not metal anymore in the strictest sense of the word. It was still good music, I wouldn't go as far as to say pop personally.
