    Audacity

Have heard good things about it. It's free too.

    N-Track Studio

Used to use it a lot. Decent enough for simple recording and multi tracking. Not quite so free but reasonably inexpensive.

    Acid Pro 5

Been using this of late. Quite cool but not cheap.

Of course, nothing beats Pro Tools but their free version only works on Windows 98

Digidesign. How are you getting Acid Pro for free? Legally?

The free version of ProTools is cack stay away. Far better free applications out there. 99% of protools greatness is the hardware. Thus why many studios have digidesign hardware and use Logic as a front end. Cubase is a good multitrack, as is nuendo. Very expensive though.

Audacity is a brilliant program, the effects aren't much to speak about but overall it's brilliant for editing. Btw if you've got Nero Burning ROM (for cd copying) on your computer check to see if you've Nero Wave Editor too, that is a very good program with high-quality effects but not as versatile as audacity.

You need to download Lame (http://lame.sourceforge.net/) and then in Audacity go to File>preferences>File formats and click Find library and then browse to the lame_enc.dll file.
