Friend of mine's offered me his Lidl "travel" satellite system he bought a few months ago, he says its all in one case and has a receiver and dish. Has anyone got one and could tell me what exactly you get with the package? (specifically what size dish is included)

Your best bet is to sell it to the poor fella in the buy and sell who's been looking for that system for months. :D:D:D

Lidl have this portable sat. system on sale again next thursday for €99. heres the link http://www.lidl.ie/ie/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20050505.p.Satellite

The receiver is AFAIK good and runs on 12V.

But the dish is better suited to SW England for Sky, or mainland Europe for Hotbird Astra.

The dish is small. But you could use it with regular Zone2 Sky dish, or better, an 80cm dish.

Will of course only do FTA (NOT FTV) satellite channels.

Queue from 8.30 am on Thursday at least if you want one.

    Today's Thursday. :D
Seriously some stores gave out little yellow tickets to those who were there at 6:30 ! - in lucan the queue went along the side of the shop and back around the far side of the car park.

Anyone know whether these have a channel number display on the receiver, based on the last time? Mainly thinking about it for Radio really, so I suppose does it have audio outputs as it will be going where's there no TV? (assuming it's same as the last time, and works off the mains also).

Not convinced it's worth being late for work, for basically the free lnb, but I suppose I'll give it a go if it meets the above critea.

It looks to be a Comag III FTA receiver. French Lidl specs mention 2x audio stereo sockets.

Cheers, and if it is that model it has the display as well http://sat-receiver-world.com/pd-1619154303.htm

Maybe it is worth getting up for then :)

The reciever is branded "Porty". A croud called inhousetechnologies.com provide the customer care on the lidl sat. systems in Ireland. They have a .pdf of the box in which this system comes on their website here It shows a close up of the reciever.

Also this offer is for next thursday (this day week) and not today.

I was never able to read the darn footprints :(
Is the dish too small for Astra 2D reception in west of Ireland?

    Thanks,
    JP

has anyone got an idea of the dish size? ...specifically want to know if I could pick up Astra 2D on it in NW France?

Not too sure about the Comag agents, Inhouse technologies. I sent an e-mail two weeks ago about a problem I had with the SL55 receiver (the other Lidl box) and I have never received the courtesy of a reply!

I already saw the official footprint map, but I still don't know if 43cm is enough for the west of ireland.

I check the austrian lidl, and it says the dish is 41.5 x 37.5 cm, plastic.

According to one of the threads on DigitalSpy, the dish size is 35cm. You can stick the dish directly on to a window if you want, how amazing is that! I’m a bit concerned over dish size, do you think Astra 2d will be able to be picked up in the Limerick city region? Specifically the bbc channels, that would do me for now…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

If you are on S.e. Ireland, England or North west france, the dish is fine. Here it is OK if weather good. It is not big enough for rain.

That's what I said (and what others said last time), this dish will work, but a bigger dish will work better, especially when it rains.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭eoinm1

I have one of these myself.

Dublin - Works great in good conditions but when it rains Some channels like 'Channel U' go bad. All BBC ones stay fine.

North Tipp - only tested in the dry and all was ok.

Has anyone with one of these any experience of reception in Dublin of the Italian RAI channels on Hotbird 2?
    Thanks.

I bought one of these the last time they were available and can confirm that the dish is plastic, 41 x 37 cm.

I know its bad form to repost, but I'm hoping one of you experts will be able to confirm whether or not I will be wasting my time queueing in the rain on Thursday. Its really RAI Sport Satellite on Hotbird 2 that I want. Thanks for any info.

First of all, the kit is very basic.. theres no CI slots in the Receiver, no card reader, no embedded cam, i mean for a few more quid more you can get all this, decent dish. also, we are not given much details on the receiver, im sure it can be programmed.

with a little knowledge in the u know where dept, and a receiver that will take a cam, and before u know it u will be watching all Prem Matches and the best movies, like Starsky & Hutch saw it last nite. and all this is for Free... so if ur serious hold out. if not go get it for ur BBC FTA channels, but thats all u will watch if u get it. unless ur multi lang.

Point taken but for a bog standard system for 99E's it dosent seem too bad.

Especially that 12V input could be quite handy.

As a camping set I would be very happy with it if I had a camper etc.

Are there any happy campers this morning? :D

    Anyone queue to get one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,115 ✭✭✭Pal

I queued today at ALDI for a patio heater. €149.99
    14kw output.
First time I ever queued at the hard discounters.
lesser model in Atlantic costs €339.00

by the time I got out I reckoned the sat deal was sold out so went home.
Folks still outside LIDL Moore Street queuing.
    don't they know it's only a FTA box ?

I think they all have a misconception that they will get Sky Sports on the thing !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

To be honest if its for camping you want, Get a old 60cm dish from somewhere (Or new) A decent FTA or STB with CI slots reciever and a 300W inverter from maplins (220v from 13v car battery) and away you go. Not sure what power a small tv will take from an inverter but that would be a better route.

I got one of these systems last thurs, however I found the reception to be dreadful on them. It was only when I stuck an old minidish lnb i had lying around the place that it worked well! I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's views on this. It seems they've changed the lnb from the last time they ran this offer (its definitely different to the one in the flier)

here's a few snaps i took when testing the system

    and a few screen shots

Got one on these on Thurday and as yet have'nt recieved a signal let alone a Picture.
I am new to satellite installation but i am very technical minded so tought it would not be a probem.
I am of the opinion that the LNB is knackered.
Using that crappy compass they give with it to line it up with ASTRA (no details to say weather it is astra 1 or 2 .Tried signal strenght menu and nothing.
Thinking of getting a new LNB and replacing current one.
Where woud i get one tomorrow (sunday) and how much ? I am in maynooth so anywhere in Dublin area is cool.

I got mine on Thursday too. The compass thing does work, but if you’re a tiny bit out you will get nothing. Keep trying, you will get there in the end. I have initially set mine up inside the window. I can close the curtains with only 1-2% signal loss. Getting between 60-70% quality strength (yes I know it should be better but I am so impressed that it is actually working inside the house!!). I have had great fun with it so far but am having problems with getting good results with H polarised channels – no doubt that will fix itself when I put it outside, I’d like to think I will get at least a 10% gain which should take care of my bbc2/3/4 problem. Overall, I’m very impressed.

jm2k – let me say also, those screenshots are brilliantly presented…

    got it working some how......
I left it on my garage roof since saturday and its arm broke ,must of fallen .
I have the arm jammed in the holder and it is staying in.Have it set up at Astra 2 in my bedroom through double glazing and i am getting 60%.

Happy days ......... now to try 19E

I bought one of those Lidl sets a few days ago. They used to sell sat finders with them, no sign this year (or maybe I didn't see them). The box seems to be okay and I am getting signal strength indication. Zero on the quality though. I read somewhere that the cable can be the cause of this but I've redone that and still had no joy.

Is the dish (35cm) big enough for Donegal?

    :)

It takes a bit of time and patience, the dish is small so you need to be accurate. Make sure the LNB is pushed forward towards the dish in the holder as far as it will go. I twice put it all back in the box with no signal quality at all, before more patience and a third attempt got me Astra 1 and 2 with 70% quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭Gargantuan

I have only been able to get ASTRA2 so far but i am confident of getting others, got a satellite finder from satellite.ie and i am going to my parents house with no trees or other houses in the way.
I had a problem with the arm breaking but a bit of super glue and its as goo as new

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 MrC

Thanks for the reply marksi. I have reboxed it a couple of times myself. I read somewhere that the LNB should be turned around in the collar also. Is that right?

    :)

just slightly this is called skew adjustment, basically its lining up the LNB feed with the angle at which the signal arrives, start with the lnb straight in the collar and then adjust for quality.

Yes, as Tony says, you need to adjust the LNB in the holder and twist it left or right a little, but don't worry about that until you've found the satellite. Once you have adjusted the dish position to give you the best signal, THEN twist the LNB a little to improve the signal quality a little more. It does take a good bit of patience!

Finally managed to get locked onto Astra and Hotbird last night albeit momentarily (the arms and hands were a bit sore to hold the dish for much longer). Was quite taken aback when the quality bars zoomed across. Have to fix the dish in place now. Thanks for the help!
