Hey. I am looking for something very specific. I want a hard disc drive mp3 player (at least 20gig) with line-in recording and direct mic recording. In an ideal world this mp3 player also has fm radio and a remote control thing.

I have no interest in colour screens and movie playback but if that is all that is on the market, I would take it.

I am willing to buy second hand or brand new. Does anyone know the best bargain?

I'm not trying to stir things up but make sure you've considered Sony's Hi-MD players too. I only suggest this as they're mostly aimed at a niche market in which people want medium-high quality recording, as opposed to the mp3-levels of compression fit for pop songs and the like :D

www.minidisc.org would be a good starting point. Seeing as there is a brand new range, the previous Hi-MD models would be cheap enough and were advertised in here a while back.

The iRiver H120 exactly meets you specs, it has:

    1) 20GB HD (there is also a 40GB model H140)
    2) Optical and analogue line in, records to either WAV or MP3
    3) In built mic.
    4) Also comes with a small wired mic that connects by the line in.
    5) Remote with 4 line LCD.
    6) FM radio.

I have one and it is excellent, see the following for a good place to buy:

Great for recording meetings, phone calls and seminars, etc. Supposedly it isn't so great for recording live concerts, but I have never tried.

the iriver H120 or H320 fits your needs exactly. both have radios. The difference is the H120 can record at full quality wav (cd quality) but cannot record from its own radio, it has optical in/out. The h320 cant record at cd quality (yet) but can do 320kps mp3 which is close enough for most, the h320 can record direct from its own radio, it has no optical in/out.

there are other differences but these are the main ones i think you will be interested in.

It works great if you get a decent microphone.

The H320 and H120 are around the same price now, because the H120 is in high demand after manufacturing stopped. I'd say go with the H320..you might not need the colour screen and movie playback, but you probably will use them if you have them.

Have to echo the previous comments about IRivers, they are excellent and very very flexible and iRiver seems to be providing plenty of firmware upgrades an providing more and more functionality as you go. Also the h320 etc are 'drag and drop' so you don't need any special software or packages to manage/update the player. It has an excellent battery life, audio playback and recording quality are excellent, the only things it doesn't have is optical in/out, and while it does have a 'study' mode, doesn't do bookmarks as far as I know.

Have to warn you that iRivers in Ireland are way overpriced, buy them anywhere outside of ireland and you can save yourself a minimum of EUR100. Note that there are a number of versions of the same package - lite, OEM, retail which come with different or fewer accessories/cables etc, so be clear on what bundle you are buying.

I bought mine in the US and saved a fortune, but you need to be forewarned that the US version is a cut down version of the EU one. You can get around most of the limitations by upgrading the firmware manually so don't let that put you off if you have the chance to get a US version.
