My CUSTOM guitar!

Hey guys, Ive decided to postpone flextone-age for a while and getting a great guitar built to my spec, as advised by a number of guys in another thread.

Ok, I found a guy through another board thats willing to make me a guitar for a very reasonable price. The guitar I want is based (shape-wise) on Matt Bellamy's custom Manson guitars. It should be the same shape body as this...

    mattsilver02small.jpg

It should look similar to this guitar (body shape, not finish). The spec I've chosen so far is:

    Tune-o-matic bridge,
SD duncan custom in bridge, maybe a p90 in the neck,
    Kill switch on upper horn,
Rosewood board (no inlays) maple neck, mahogany body,
Maybe a tele style headstock or maybe PRS (open to suggestions)
    3-way p-up selector,
Built in fuzz factory with front mounted stab control.:D
    Grover tuners,
Very rounded edges... not just router rounded.
Black gloss finish with chrome hardware.

Thats about all i can think of at the moment.
Im supplying my own pickups and tuners to keep the cost down.

So with delivery, assembly and all it should be under €600 which is really cool.

Just I'd share the news with all you guys!
Post your thoughts, opinions, constructive critisism here!

EDIT: Clickity for a better idea of the shape!

Oh jesus, what has Karl Hungus started?

That's it, I'm buying a lock of alder and a lump of maple and I'm making myself a guitar!

Someone else with a custom guitar!? I ordered mine first though! I only hope I get mine first.

I still want to be the first person on boards with a custom.

Hehe.. what are your thoughts on the actual guitar though... especially the shape, and body materials...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Don't like it.

Hahaha... mine will only take a month or so because the guy only does it for a hobby! So... unless BC Rich get their asses into gear, I will be the first person with a custom!

Bah! go to hell! I like that shape... the first pic makes it look weird... see the second pic in the link at the bottom of my first post for a better idea. I think it will look pretty good with a plain black finish.

Tough cheese, my Eggle is one of a kind. Serial number 23 of 48 made and mine has a different pickup route (the others are P90 shaped) to all the others.

    Bastard!

Also, it's a pug-fugly shape. I probably shouldn't say that because the Stealth shape isn't exactly to everyone's taste, but it's still damned fugly!

Don't like that shape at all. I'm struggling to see how you'll get the raw materials alone for €600, let alone the dude making money to build it. Is he making the neck too?

Yes, they made it, I bought it. Plus, I did the factory visit :D

You'd get the woods for about €100

Nah i think hes buying the neck, making the body... well hes a sound guy so he said that £220 would get the unfinished neck and body, so im guessing that 600 should cover it all since im supplying most of the pickups/hardware. I like the shape... maybe a bit less extreme than that like the Carvin SC series.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Just make sure you get the best neck you can afford. If the neck sucks, the whole guitar sucks.

Well bugger that, because my Stealth will be the coolest guitar there is.

Ha, I'm just pissing on your parade Ken, I did all the customising myself. There is nothing cooler than the Eggle, it has Tony Iommi crosses FFS :p

Ive been thinking a lot about the shape... I really want a unique shape if i get the custom, that isnt already being made... I might ask him if hes able to do a SZ/Schecter C-1/PRS/Eggle kinda shape... But It wouldnt be as unique as the f*cked up tele shape.

Have look at some custom basses for shape ideas, guitar design is, apart from the pointy ones, generally rather conservatrve

I'm lucky in the respect that very few people have the Stealth body shape.

Sorry Karl, got my warmoth custom a few months back :p

Mahogany VIP body with hollow chambers and a AAA quilted maple top
    Mahogany neck with custom headstock
24 fret Pao Ferro Fretboard, 6100 Dulop fretwire
    Gotoh 610 bridge
    Schaller locking machine heads
Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz pickups (Coil Tapped)
Now all I need is a custom thruss rod cover with my name :)

You can play my Les if i get a spin of that. :) And hell, I'll even throw in a shot of the Warwick too. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

So whats the verdict? Will i get it? Does anyone actually like that shape apart from me?!

Already have a les paul, and my bro has a 4 and 6 string Warwick corvette, I should really get a pic up of the whole family* :)

*(By family I mean the collection of guitars and basses currently in my house :) )

I personally really like the shape, I'd really wanna find out more about the neck though before puttin cash down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

i was actually talking to freakonaleashx but I like the sound of that family all the same. :) Wish I had it...

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,654 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

ok i ask that there be a rule put in place whereby people cant hijack threads and go on about there own guitars

"oh yeah you getting a custom guitar aswell but look at mine, me me me"

    its ridiculous

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    It's all relative, mayordenis.

This forum is designed for waffling on about how much you love your guitar anyway. :D

Yeah... but mine could take 2-3 months now:mad:. So i mightnt have it for nerdcamp... But yeah... My guitar builder is pretty sound, hes gonna do it arch top for no extra cost! sweeeet!

I chose the fender style neck radius. Only one question left... which headstock? I was thinking either PRS style or maybe strat or tele... i dunno

  • just to throw another side-track into this thread, if i actually manage to get res, my tele will definitely be at nerdcamp.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Personally, I think the PRS style headstock is far superior to that of the strat or tele.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Maybe tele-style but fatter. Somewhere closer to a strat.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Design one yourself. Something with a 4-2 tuner set up could be nice, like on Ernie Balls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

    Good good emmet!

Do you think the PRS style would look well in context with the body shape? I checked out the necks hes using and they look pretty nice, he used one on his own guitar and he recommends them.

What make of neck is it?

  • Super-wide neck 2 Neck 3

how about a "V" neck? or an explorer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Do you think the PRS style would look well in context with the body shape?

Well, the body shape is kind of a mal-formed Les Paul, so i certainly can't see the fender style headstocks looking good at all. The PRS headstocks are really nice looking though, so go for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Hell no! a "V" neck?! Like a dimecaster?! f*ck no! Hes getting the neck from craftsupplies.co.uk. Clickity Its in that catalogue. Although one thing worries me... they dont seem to have truss rods! Or maybe you just adjust them like my acoustic, with the screw thing beside the neck pickup... I think I'll go for the tele style or maybe modern strat (really kinda small/narrow) style.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭cormhag

if i was getting a custom id make sure that it was a shape i was sure about. you dont sound to sure. . . go for something classy, nothing too extreme as you may tire of it in a few years. thats my advice.

I thought it looked more like a tele than a les paul

Aye, the allan key end at the bridge pickup

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Truss rods can be installed both ways, adjusting from the head or heel. The Ernie Ball John Petrucci sig has a spoke wheel in front of the neck pickup for truss rod adjustment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Yep but i dont see a spoke wheel on that one... or do you like... install them yourself, like attatch them to the truss somehow?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Not generally. Could be one of those necks that you have to take off the guitar to tweak the truss rod. It's not something that has to be done often though. Early Fenders were like that I think.

I personally like the shape freakonabeach, but i mean it was either matt bellamy's or his luthier's design. You may just look like a bellamy wannabe. You should design your own shape, main thing is go for it but be sure of what you are getting.

Karl Hungus, i think you are miles behind on the list of people getting custom guitars, although i discovered your thread about the 8 string and all your plans before i ordered mine i'm still fairly i ordered before you did, and despite the fact i should have had weeks ago i should still have it months in advance of yours. Anyway only joking it isn't a competition.

There should be a boards event where we all display our custom made guitars...Mahoyven.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,654 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

im gonna build my own 2moro just too win this silly competition.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Too late. I just made my own out of pizza crusts.

Hmmm, maybe we should start a custom build group/forum?

Nein... its hugh mansons (his luthier) design. Matt Bellamy just made it famous because he was the first famous person to have one. A few people have them now but not many because Manson's cost like £2500 for a matt-o-caster. After research i found out that carvin had the design well before mansons. See the SC series... They were being made 25 years ago
