Would like to do one if these but they're always women's events. Why no men's ones or all-comers welcome???

    Men's only would be discriminatory.

Why not run the womens one then? Plenty of guys do it - all you need it two baloons, a wig and a nice summer dress :D

    What's a proper distance?

Have you ever raced a 400m?

The women's mini marathon started life as an attempt to get more women involved in athletics, or physical activity. Women are predisposed to a lot of sedentary diseases and as a population tend to be less active than men. This is a great initiative to get women out walking, or running just for fun or for the more competitive as an attempt to compete with women from all over Ireland and the world.

Charitable organisations jump at the chance to get sponsorship for the mini marathon because it gets them such great exposure etc.

If it was called the women's mini marathon for other reasons then I'd agree with the calls of discrimination, but it's intentions/motives are good.

You can do the mini marathon if it means that much to you, just stick on a wig and some make up and you're sorted.

The women don't have to wear make-up or wigs. (Though some could do with them :p )

    Discrimination, I say.

I was joking, and yes I have raced 400m. I prefer longer distances though. I started running half marathons and then went on to full marathons.

Or, as one runner did, wear a big sign saying "Does my ass look big in this?". He didn't have a number, but then neither did any of the lads. Many run for sponsorship, I think. Some just for the fun.
