From ENN. Can't find the SPB article.
The Sunday Business Post also reports that the Department of Communications is investigating the possibility of setting up a new telecoms company using the existing infrastructure of other semi-State companies. The department has looked at the networks of both ESB and Bord Gais to see if a telecoms firm could effectively piggy-back on their infrastructure.

There are some rumours that an Bord Gáis may wish to offload Aurora , their telecoms arm, so it would make sense to consolidate that into the ESB Fibre network.

The article is on N3 (part of the main section) and looks to me like a bit of a filler article. It says that the Department are continuously looking at all options to improve the telecoms infrastructure in Ireland. As part of this the looked at the possibility of setting up a new teleco
One source who has knowledge of the project said "The division looks at a various range of options and internally they don't rule anything out; we consider everything. These ideas have been floating about but there has been nothing concrete".

The chance of the Government setting up another telco are slim, for a start the EU would be all over them, with Eircom crying foul play. Secondly can you really see FF doing anything to remind the Irish Public of the hammering they took over the Eircom selloff the first time round.

I think a lot of this stuff is about putting pressure on Eircom and doesn't represent any intented action on the part of the Government.

It is a bit transparent alright. You can see the Eircom guys laughing into their cognacs snifters.

There's also a tendency to issue press releases to give the impression that the Government are "doing something" e.g. a couple of years ago they issued a press release saying that they were "looking into" broadband from blimps.

Eircom do the same thing too. For example, the ADSL2+ announcement a year ago. They try to give the impression that things are progressing and there's no need to worry.

Indeed - you will remember this (Aurora) from other similar such famous projects such as the WDC (RIP) :) - makes sense to tie in ESB/Aurora/MANs and possibly some reliable WLL to finish off the job - technically all easily done - all support SDH (Core) and native IP (Provider edge and local loop) - the problem will be in the contract/agreement - who paid for what, who owns it and management/demarcation points. Last thing anyone wants/needs is for any of these projects to become big white elephants...

We love our WDC , 48 x DWDM pairs IIRC , easily capable of 4 x 2.5gbps waves each = grand total 480 gbps to Dublin from the wesht .

It is a pink elephant I will have you know :(
